The Historia Regum Britanniae explains that when Merlin died he was "400 Summers his Lord" (His Lord would be Arthur and Arthur died in his 40's to 60's). So we can assume that Merlin was around 440-460 years old. However his character was based on Myrddin Wyllt. Myrddin died at the age of 39.
From Geoffrey's account in the story, it is explained that Merlin died “400 Summers his Lord”; his Lord being Arthur. 400 + Arthurs age would be the age he was when he died, so let's estimate 460 years old. What did Merlin do after Arthur died?
In the Perceval en prose (also known as the Didot Perceval and also attributed to Robert), where Merlin is the initiator of the Grail Quest and cannot die until the end of days, he eventually retires after Arthur's downfall by turning himself into a bird and entering the mysterious esplumoir, never to be seen again.
