Ripley also later learns that her daughter passed away two years before she was discovered, but while this confirms the film's timeline of events, it still is not explained how this was revealed to Ripley.

After revealing that Ripley had been frozen for 57 years, and that her daughter passed away two years earlier. After learning of The Derelict ship from Ripley, he agrees to help regain her flight license in return for her returning to LV-426 to investigate.

Two possibilities immediately present themselves: She was infested with an embryo that was eventually meant to become a queen. It's possible the gestation time for that particular xenomorph form is longer, to allow for more complex brain development or the like. She was infested while she was still in hibernation.
After the crash, Newt's broken tube was flooded and she drowned. Since the Alien embryo required a living host, it escaped through Newt's mouth, swam to Ripley (whose tube had been shattered during the crash), forced her mouth open and crawled into Ripley's esophagus (explaining why Ripley has a sore throat).

Unfortunately Ripley was carrying a Queen Alien embryo inside of her, which the company, Weyland Yutani, wanted to preserve to produce biological weapons. Ripley kills herself to avoid this. Centuries after the death of Ripley, scientists were able to clone her using DNA acquired from the incidents in Alien 3.
The alien-fighting warrant officer revealed her shaved head in the third instalment of the successful franchise, which had her stranded on a prison spaceship. “I think it brings out the faces and the vulnerability of these actors very much,” she said of her and her fellow cast mate's shorn locks.
Alien is set in the year 2122, which means this Alien prequel series is set in the early 2090s, much closer to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant in the franchise timeline. FX's show is the first project in the Alien franchise to take place on Earth.

Sigourney Weaver was 29/30 when she made Alien, but she looks a lot older in Aliens, when technically she shouldn't (but you can't stop the actress from ageing). According to wikipedia, Ripley was born in 2092, making her about 30 at the time of the events in Alien.
How did it reach LV 426, which is 39 light years away from Earth, so quickly? The Sulaco uses two forms of propulsion: sublight propulsion is provided by four Gates-Heidmann GF-240 rocket motors, powered by the ship's fusion core.
Ripley soon learns that during her cryostasis aboard the escape pod, she was attacked by a Face Hugger, and impregnated with a Xenomorph embryo. A scan using the escape pod's barely functioning medical apparatus reveals this baby is none other than an Alien Queen.
Upon her reunion with Ripley 8 (now exhibiting Xenomorph traits) the Queen had moved past the egg laying stage and developed a massive womb, Ripley's genetic "gift", according to the maddened Dr. Gediman. The Newborn emerges from the womb, the Queen's first live birth.
The role of Ripley in Alien was originally written for a man, however, Sigourney Weaver's casting went on to change the portrayal of women in Sci-Fi. Ellen Ripley has strong leadership qualities upheld by her strength and resourcefulness, which were not seen in representations of women at the time.
Following the destruction of the original Xenomorph Hive and the derelict on Acheron, and the death of the Runner on Fiorina "Fury" 161, Ellen Ripley committed sacrificial suicide to destroy the last known Xenomorph specimen in existence — the embryonic Queen developing inside her.
Despite the fact that it violated Weyland-Yutani regulations, Ripley allowed the pregnancy to come to term, eventually resulting in the birth of her daughter Amanda. She was not disciplined for this transgression.
Ellen Ripley later found Jonesy and put him in a carry case. At one point, Ripley was forced to abandon Jonesy to the Alien, but, while the Xenomorph was notably distracted by the cat, it did not attack it. Jonesy was later recovered and put in hypersleep aboard the Narcissus after escaping with Ripley.
However, it has been postulated that her survival was solely as a result of her altered genetic structure. In essence, Ripley 8 was part-Xenomorph and therefore a unique case.
Ripley then had a short face-off with the creature in front of the shuttle, and with it blocking her way, she rushed to reactivate the cooling unit. However, despite the fact that she turned the cooling back on, Mother finalized the self destruct.
To sell that moment, actor Sigourney Weaver came up with the idea of Ripley having a psychological crutch to help her survive: muttering "You Are My Lucky Star", which we as the audience presume to be a comforting favourite childhood song.
