Although Tron was not the first film to use CGI, it was the first to incorporate 15 minutes of CGI, inspiring filmmakers such as George Lucas, James Cameron and Tim Burton. John Lasseter, former chief of Pixar, has said that without Tron there would be no Toy Story.
A full fifteen minutes of the film consists of moving images generated entirely by computer. Additionally, there are over two hundred scenes that utilize computer-generated backgrounds. Much of the remaining effects in the film were backlit optical effects.
The long-awaited latter movie used cutting-edge CGI (for the time) to age Bridges down when he was playing Clu, who wouldn't have aged in the intervening 28 years.
In the year it was released, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences refused to nominate Tron for a special-effects Academy Award because, as director Steven Lisberger puts it, "The Academy thought we cheated by using computers".
They became uncertain about continuing their robotic personas in light of this. Bangalter said "as much as I love this character, the last thing I would want to be, in the world we live in, in 2023, is a robot," (via Billboard). Considering this, it's unlikely that Daft Punk will return to create music for Tron: Ares.
Unfortunately Tron did not take off as a new Disney franchise, despite Tron: Legacy grossing a respectable $400 million at the worldwide box office. The original Tron of course was itself not exactly a massive box office success for Disney.

Tron is not a bad film by any stretch of the imagination. In many ways, it has aged better than its 2010 sequel, Tron Legacy. That being said, the early computer-generated visuals of the film are undeniably dated.

In "Tron: Legacy," Clu was created to help Bridges' character and the other program, Tron, build a perfect virtual world, but Clu turns evil with his own dark notions of building a virtual society. To make Clu, filmmakers made a silicon mold of Bridges' face and painted it like real flesh.
It took two years and 10 companies to create the 1,565 visual effects shots of Tron: Legacy. The majority of the effects were done by Digital Domain, who created 882 shots under supervisor Eric Barba.
It's been a long road to completion, with numerous re-writes, changes in directors, and a historic industry strike taking place, it seems that the third Tron film may finally be releasing (unless Disney just decides to use the film as a tax write-off in the same way Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme were to Warner Bros).

22 years later, on 22nd February 2021, the group announced their split in a video based on a scene from their 2006 film Electroma, in which Bangalter's robot dramatically explodes. Neither demise appears to have done Daft Punk much harm.
