33 years ago - 29-year-old Alfred Pennyworth receives word that his father is dying. He returns to Wayne manor and meets young Bruce Wayne. He helps him outsmart a bully, and decides to stay for him. 31 years ago - 31-year-old Alfred Pennyworth becomes Bruce's legal guardian after Thomas and Martha Wayne are killed.
Pennyworth tells the story of a 26-year-old Alfred, long before Bruce Wayne is even born (or, spoiler alert, Thomas and Martha Wayne even like each other). It paints a picture of a complex, damaged man who's searching for something or someone to make him whole.

As the treadmill vanishes from the scene into the timestream, Thomas cites a quote he had told Bruce after he first fell into the cave: "Waynes never stay down... they rise!" Desperate, Wayne turned to Falcone to have the latter intimidate the reporter, only for Falcone to kill him so he could have something on the Wayne family. Wayne, wracked with guilt, threatened to reveal everything to the police; he and his wife to be killed were murdered a week later.
Later, Arthur goes to Arkham State Hospital and steals his mother's records, and finds out that he was in fact adopted, and that Thomas Wayne is not his father and that Penny is not his true mother.
Alfred has acted as a Father figure to Bruce since his parents died when he was 8. Once Bruce decided to don the cape and cowl, Alfred was still there by his side helping him whenever he could. Due to his knowledge of advanced first aid, he acts as Batman's surgeon, constantly fixing Bruce's wounds whenever need be.
Soon after, Pennyworth became an intelligance agent for the British Government. Afterwards, Alfred acted as a war medic, becoming a very skilled surgeon. During this time he had a marriage and a daughter, Julia. The marriage was ot a success and Alfred divorced his wife.
Family. Alfred's father, Jarvis Pennyworth, had previous served the Wayne family as their butler prior to his employ. His death motivated Alfred to take over the position to the Wayne family.

According to Penny, Arthur was born of an affair she had with Thomas when she worked for him. She said in a flashback that Thomas' wealth, power, and influence helped to produce the claim and paperwork that Arthur was adopted.
