As Knightly points out, her dislike of Jane Fairfax came “because she saw in her the really accomplished young woman, which she wanted to be thought herself” (Austen 156). This lack of maturity breeds jealousy and it doesn't take long for Emma to retaliate in ways both passive aggressive and mean.
The marriage of Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill is another such convenient marriage since Frank's character and behavior are so seriously flawed that he cannot be considered a reward for a deserving woman.
Austen makes it clear that Mr. Knightley did not think of Emma romantically until she showed an interest in Frank Churchill. “He had been in love with Emma, and jealous of Frank Churchill, from about the same period, one sentiment having probably enlightened him as to the other” (Volume 3, Chapter 13).
Emma does not realize her own feelings for Mr. Knightley until Harriet expresses how wonderful he is. Emma finally does her heart justice when she admits, "'Mr. Knightley must marry no one but herself'" (382).
Weston thinks Mr. Knightley is in love with Jane Fairfax; but when Emma suggests that to him, he denies it quite decisively (II, xv, 287). He remarks that Jane is too secretive; and he is the only one who eventually begins to have a sound idea of what her secret is.
Knightley, but Emma resists this supposition vigorously, explaining that she cannot bear the thought of Mr. Knightley marrying because then her nephew, George and Isabella's son Henry, will not be able to inherit Donwell Abbey, the Knightley estate in the town of the same name.

Emma professes that she does not ever wish to marry (unless she falls very much in love), as she has no financial need to, because she has a large inheritance and does not wish to leave her father alone.
But while the visuals are unusually bold for a Regency period drama, 2020's Emma remains largely faithful to Austen's story of meddling Emma Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy), who plays matchmaker for her new friend Harriet (Mia Goth), with disastrous results.
Pride and Prejudice is set in England at some point in the very late 1700s-early 1800s. The exact dates are unclear, but we know the action takes place some time during the Napoleonic Wars (1797-1815) because Austen references soldiers and regiments.
