Skilled in the more unorthodox applications of the Force, he was skilled in conjuring Force illusions, convincing enough to fool even Sidious. Plagueis was a very capable combatant, absorbing blaster bolts and then channeling it into Force lightning, an ability that he was also very skilled in.
However, Plagueis also developed a belief that the Force could "strike back" at him for his power. In truth, he became so powerful that the only thing he still dreaded was losing his power. Under the Rule of Two, Sidious killed his master and trained his own Sith apprentice, Darth Maul.
Nihilus and Plagueis are merely competent. They both are even less interested in dueling than Sidious is. They can fight well against most opponents but they use the Lightsaber as a mere delaying tactic while letting force powers do the heavy lifting.
