Sigourney Weaver was 29/30 when she made Alien, but she looks a lot older in Aliens, when technically she shouldn't (but you can't stop the actress from ageing). According to wikipedia, Ripley was born in 2092, making her about 30 at the time of the events in Alien.
Ripley 8 subsequently became involved in the Xenomorph outbreak and infestation aboard the Auriga. While outwardly human, cross-contamination of DNA between Ripley 8 and the Xenomorph inside her endowed Ripley 8 with several Xenomorph attributes; essentially, she was neither human nor alien, but something in between.
Ripley soon learns that during her cryostasis aboard the escape pod, she was attacked by a Face Hugger, and impregnated with a Xenomorph embryo. A scan using the escape pod's barely functioning medical apparatus reveals this baby is none other than an Alien Queen.
The alien-fighting warrant officer revealed her shaved head in the third instalment of the successful franchise, which had her stranded on a prison spaceship. “I think it brings out the faces and the vulnerability of these actors very much,” she said of her and her fellow cast mate's shorn locks.
Unfortunately Ripley was carrying a Queen Alien embryo inside of her, which the company, Weyland Yutani, wanted to preserve to produce biological weapons. Ripley kills herself to avoid this. Centuries after the death of Ripley, scientists were able to clone her using DNA acquired from the incidents in Alien 3.
When the EEV report is being made at the beginning of the film, Ripley is listed as Lieutenant. Yet, Ripley's rank was always a warrant officer, a lower rank than lieutenant (the extended inquest of the Aliens Director's Cut makes this clear).

Ripley Was In Cryosleep For 56 Years Between Alien & Aliens
As the beginning of Aliens reveals, Ripley's escape pod from the original film put her in cryosleep as she flew through space, with her not being rescued by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation until 56 years later.
Even so, the character initially was going to be a man, with writer Dan O' Bannon planning for all of the crew on the tug Nostromo spaceship to be male. However, the visionary opted to change Ripley's gender after realising that the studio believed in “the return of the woman's movie”.
Upon her reunion with Ripley 8 (now exhibiting Xenomorph traits) the Queen had moved past the egg laying stage and developed a massive womb, Ripley's genetic "gift", according to the maddened Dr. Gediman. The Newborn emerges from the womb, the Queen's first live birth.
She dives into the furnace, destroying both herself and the embryo inside her. In doing so, she hopes to prevent Weyland-Yutani from using the Xenomorph as a biological weapon. It's a powerful decision by Ripley, one which finally sees her break free of Weyland-Yutani's hold.
After having sacrificed herself to kill the Alien queen gestating inside her in Alien 3, Ripley has been cloned using blood samples so that the military may extract the queen embryo. As a result of the cloning process Ripley has been affected by the Alien queen's DNA.
Nearly every single choice in Alien: Resurrection feels misguided. Joss Whedon's script lacks the terror and suspense of an Alien film as well as just being full of really bad dialogue. The performances from the entire cast are shockingly poor, and there's an overall lack of passion for the telling of this story.
Some therefore claim that there had to be several eggs and facehuggers on the Sulaco, as one facehugger impregnated Ripley while in hypersleep, a second one cut itself while trying to crack open Newt's cryotube (thus starting the fire on the ship), and a third journeyed with the crew in the EEV (escape pod) and later ...

From my calculations (correct me if I'm wrong), in Aliens (that is 57 years after Alien) Ripley's daughter Amanda would be 68, which makes her about 11 years old at the time of events from Alien, therefore Ripley couldn't possibly be in her early 20s, for example.
To sell that moment, actor Sigourney Weaver came up with the idea of Ripley having a psychological crutch to help her survive: muttering "You Are My Lucky Star", which we as the audience presume to be a comforting favourite childhood song.
In Alien 3, Ripley gets infected with a Xenomorph embryo by a Facehugger and lands on a prison planet following the unceremonious deaths of Hicks and Newt.
When Ripley tries to escape from Ash, she suddenly has a nosebleed for no reason. This was actually supposed to tie in to an earlier deleted scene where she suffers a decompression injury, but the sequence was cut from the film.
