In spite of their many differences, Andor and The Mandalorian share a deep connection. The three-part premiere of Andor delved into a previously unknown aspect of Cassian's life by using flashbacks to explore his childhood. Apparently, he grew up as a boy separated from his people by tragedy.
And although they're set in the same universe, Mando and Andor differ in tone; The Mandalorian is brighter, happier, and gives the sense that everything will turn out just fine. In stark contrast, we already know what happens to Cassian Andor. (Spoiler alert: It does not turn out just fine.)

The differences between “Andor” and “The Mandalorian” are to be basked in, not picked apart. One show focuses on the beginnings of the end of the Evil Empire. The other navigates in the aftermath of that fall with a cute kid at the center of it. But everyone can relax.
That is when Andor reveals that Luthen carries a stick that very much resembles a lightsaber. While this object looks quite different from the lightsabers used by Jedi in Star Wars canon, it does look like something an Old Republic Jedi would have used.
Moreover, each series is serving two distinct subsets of fans, along with plenty of people who fit inside the spot where the circles on the Star Wars Venn diagram overlap. Andor was a welcome change of pace for viewers who normally wouldn't watch Star Wars or aren't in it for the Easter eggs.
The series follows thief-turned-rebel spy Cassian Andor during the five years that lead to the events of the two films, exploring how he becomes radicalized against the Galactic Empire and how the wider Rebel Alliance is formed.
At the point of Andor taking place, Anakin Skywalker is still Darth Vader, the right-hand man to Emperor Palpatine. At this point in the Star Wars timeline, Vader is mainly tracking down former Jedi with his Inquisitors as shown in Star Wars: Rebels which begins in the same year as Andor takes place.
The Empire of Andor is different. Darth Vader and the Death Star are somewhere off-screen—the former unmentioned, the latter also unacknowledged aside from a stray reference to Scarif. The Emperor is remote and voiceless, the unseen spider at the center of a galaxy-wide web.
Andor takes place five years before Luke, Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca teamed up and took down the Death Star in A New Hope. That would put the princess in her early teenage years in Andor.
“Obi-Wan Kenobi” is set 10 years after the events of “Revenge of the Sith.” “Andor” and “Star Wars Rebels” take place during the lead-up to “A New Hope,” while “The Mandalorian” picks up five years after “Return of the Jedi.”
Andor tells the story of Cassian (Diego Luna) five years before the events of Rogue One. In doing so, the series serves as a link to Star Wars creations that do not primarily feature Jedi. Andor explores the rebellion in all its glory without Jedi/The Skywalker Saga as a central premise or even an on-screen presence.
While "Andor" might not be as flashy as other "Star Wars" shows like "The Mandalorian," or even "Obi-Wan Kenobi," it definitely stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Emperor Palpatine has yet to appear in Andor, yet his presence looms large in the series, offing the possibility of a new sort of portrayal of the secret Sith Lord.
Andor contributes to the mega-plot of the Rebellion and the construction - and later destruction - of the Death Star while still telling its own story and fleshing out its characters. It is a relevant and interesting story that feels like it belongs in the Star Wars universe.

The iconic droid does not show up in Andor, but, its story and cinematography has knocked the socks off critics. It's a good thing that there's not long to wait til it hits Disney+.
