The box office-shattering film will premiere on September 12. Barbie will be available for purchase at $29.99 or for rent at $24.99 on multiple OTT platforms. It will be released on Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Apple TV+, Vudu, and others. In India, Barbie will be made available by BMS Stream on the same date.
The original India Barbie, created in 1981 for the International Collection which sold in the US and in Europe, was the standard blonde Barbie except she wore a sari. Given the strict trade laws in India, Mattel could not sell dolls in India until the late 1980s.
Mattel did make an effort to adapt the doll for an Indian market. When Mattel launched Barbie in India in 1991, it was the familiar Western-looking blond-haired blue-eyed Barbie. Then in 1996, they rolled out Indian Barbie, with brown skin.
Good news for all the OTT viewers who were keenly waiting to watch Barbie at home with their friends and family. Greta Gerwig's box office blockbuster is available on OTT. The movie can be watched on rent on Prime Video for ₹500.
