Dream Walking, Nightmare Creation and Manipulation- Freddy Krueger is a Dream Walker with the ability to enter people's dreams and create and manipulate nightmares based on people's fears.
Freddy is somewhat of a dream demon, and he terrorizes teens while they sleep. When he kills them in their dreams, they of course end up also being killed in real life. And with sleep being vital to human life, avoiding him is relatively impossible.
Well in the original lore, Nightmare 1–5, Freddy's Dead, and Freddy vs Jason he is a person who died and then the dream demons gave him his powers. So, he is technically not a demon, but gets his powers from dream demons to enter dreams and do his dirty deeds.
Created by Wes Craven, he made his debut in Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) as the malevolent spirit of a child killer who had been burned to death by his victims' parents after evading prison. Krueger goes on to murder his victims in their dreams, causing their deaths in the real world as well.
Right before his death, a group of demons called Dream Demons appeared to him and offered him a deal. In exchange for a certain level of immortality and the aforementioned powers, Freddy would be a pawn for them to terrorize the human race.
However, New Line leader Robert Shaye demanded a twist ending, in which Krueger disappears and all seems to have been a dream, only for the audience to discover that it was a dream-within-a-dream-within-a-dream.

Several years before the events of A Nightmare On Elm Street, he killed many people and was known as the Springwood Slasher. The parents of his child victims wanted to get revenge on him and tried to kill him in a boiler room by setting him on fire.
One of the main weaknesses of Freddy Krueger is that he primarily exists within the realm of dreams. His ability to harm and torment his victims is limited to their dreams, and he becomes vulnerable when confronted outside of the dream world. Another weakness is the resilience and unity of his potential victims.
However, Krueger is also motivated by pedophillic disorder, the sexual component of which is indicated by the fact that his victims were murdered in their beds.
After being burned alive by the parents of his victims, Freddy was given supernatural abilities by a trio of demons. Now, a powerful demon himself, Freddy returned to the neighborhood to get revenge on the parents that burned him, by killing their children.
Maggie finds her adoption papers and realizes that she is Freddy's daughter. Her birth name was Katherine Krueger, but her name was changed to Maggie Burroughs when her father was arrested and subsequently murdered.
This also tracks with Nightmare. In Craven's original script, Freddy originated as a child molester who was caught and burned to death by angry parents. But, due to a coincidental child abuse scandal that occurred in California while the movie was in production, he was written as a child murderer instead.
In all of his appearances, Freddy is depicted as an undead, demonic serial killer who is commonly identified by his burned, disfigured face, red and dark green striped sweater and brown fedora.
Freddy built the glove to torture and kill his young victims, with Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare revealing he built a number of prototype gloves, including one with sharp spikes and another with razor blades on the fingertips.

Being Freddy's archenemy, Nancy is the protagonist in the original film, and serves as a supporting character guide for other characters in the third film.

As most know, in the original Nightmare on Elm Street series, Freddy is recognized as Child Killer who was murdered by the towns people. In the 2010 remake, he's revealed to be a Child Molester, arguably innocent, too.
Before Freddy was killed by a vigilante mob of all Springwood citizens as a human, the Dream Demons appear to him and offer him a deal involving him to become their agent in exchange for vast power and to become "forever". Freddy accepts their deal and the Demons merge with him, giving him his powers.
It is just as well the series hasn't since it turns out A Nightmare On Elm Street's chronology makes Freddy far younger than a lot of viewers may expect. According to A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Freddy was born in 1942 and burned to death in 1968, making him only 26 when he died.
