Gimli had wanted to accompany his father on the quest to reclaim Erebor, but at age 62 he was deemed too young. He was a remote descendant of Durin the Deathless, chief of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves and ancestor of the Longbeards.
Born in TA 2879, Gimli was the son of Glóin and a nephew of Óin, both former companions of Bilbo Baggins. He was a descendant of Durin the Deathless, father of the first house of the Dwarven people.
How Durin IV & Gimli Are Related. Gimli is indeed a distant relative of Durin IV as his father Glóin traces his origins from the line of Durin of the Dwarves of Erebor. These were the Dwarves who dwelt beneath the Lonely Mountain and were one of the seven kinds of Dwarves (known as Khazâd).

Thorin is the heir to the dominant line of Durin I, but Dain I Ironfoot, is also from the Line of Durin. His grandfather Gror is the youngest son of Dain I. The Hobbit movie really hits the “end of Durin's line” home and I couldn't really explain why.
In The Fellowship of the Ring, Gimli is among the group who stumble upon the grave of the last Lord of Moria, Balin. Afterwards, Gimli uses the axe of his third cousin, Balin, in battle.
As of episode 5 of The Rings of Power, Elrond and Durin remain fierce friends and allies. However, they started the show at odds: Elrond sought the dwarves' help for Celebrimbor's (Charles Edwards) smithing project in Eregion, yet Durin was offended by Elrond's lack of contact over the past two decades.
Gimli is not the last of the dwarves. This is a common misconception because Gimli is the only dwarf who gets a fair amount of coverage in the franchise. Lord of the Rings focuses its narrative primarily on the affairs of men, elves, and hobbits. Dwarves are a secluded race that lives in the mountains.
Later, Elrond is so eager to prove himself worthy of Durin's trust that he threatens his own position within elven society by refusing to break the promise he made to the dwarven prince.
In the Wiki there is written: His birth was prophesied by the Dwarves in the conclusion of the Battle of the Five Armies, that in the direct line of Dáin II Ironfoot there will be an heir, but the last of his line.
He lived to a great age, even by the measure of the Dwarves, until he was known as "the Deathless"; however, he was not actually immortal, and died before the end of the First Age and his tomb was in Khazad-dûm.
Tauriel truly threw a wrench in Legolas' life when he fell in love with her. She was brave, fierce, and a protective leader of the guard. He was meant to be the dutiful son of King Thranduil, but in loving her, he became a stubborn, masterful archer instead.
In episode 7, King Durin III discovered his son Durin IV trying to mine more mithril for the elves. He disowned his son in one of the show's most heartbreaking scenes yet.

Moria was founded by Durin at the end of the Ages of the Stars. During his reign, the precious metal mithril was discovered in the mines, and some of the major structures of Moria were built: Durin's Bridge, the Second Hall, the Endless Stair and Durin's Tower. Durin died before the end of the First Age.
Thrór I was the King of Durin's Folk, the son of Dáin I and brother of Frór and Grór, known for ruling Erebor in the Lonely Mountain. He was the father of Thráin II, whose son was Thorin II.
The line of the descendants of Durin the Deathless, hereditary Dwarven-kings of Durin's Folk. Thrór, Thráin II and Thorin II Oakenshield were all descended from this House.
