How I interpret the Fantastic Beasts films' Newt Scamander is he had experienced an emotional connection with Leta Lestrange back at Hogwarts and Tina is the only person since who has approached similar attraction and understanding. Newt had fallen out of love with Leta and is beginning to fall for Tina.
