In some stories, Cinderella's real name was Ella, and because she would always lie in cinders, her stepfamily would call her Cinderella. However, in the Disney film, "Cinderella" is truly her name by birth.
Ilene Woods voiced her in the original film, and later Jennifer Hale in the sequels. In the 2015 live-action film, Ella was the character's original name; Cinderella was instead a spiteful nickname given by the stepsisters to Ella after she slept near the fireplace and was subsequently covered by cinder (ash).

The Brothers Grimm had a, well, grimmer take on the tale
The Brothers Grimm also collected the tale in their famous fairy tale compendium. That story, called Aschenputtel (Cinderella in the English translations), appeared more than 100 years after Perrault's version in the 19th century.
While there is no one real story of Cinderella, the Grimm Bothers wrote a version based on the many earlier versions that was originally published in 1812. It was titled Aschenputtel, or "The Little Ash Girl" which then became Cinderella in English translations.
Why did Cinderella's step sisters call her Cinderella?
