With a restraint heavy PG-13 rating, and a middle-of-the-road concept, "Insidious" isn't looking too pretty. However, looks can be deceiving. This is one movie that doesn't mess around, and doesn't play it safe either.
Insidious is one of the many horror series launched by the director James Wan, who was also behind Saw and The Conjuring. Unlike those two long-running franchises, Insidious movies are always rated PG-13, de-emphasizing gory intensity but providing plenty of nasty frights.
If they are around 12 to 13 I'd say don't let them watch it yet until they're maybe 14 or at least have a basic understanding of what movie they are getting into and that while some parts of the conjuring universe was inspired by real life events, none of it is real.
The movie has a few really good scares of course but overall the first movie was a lot creepier and more disturbing. In fact, you happen to know what is going on if you have seen the first movie and that's why you aren't that shocked or surprised anymore.
This movie has some scary scenes including a girl with no eyes or mouth crawling after the main character. There is also some jump scares that could scare younger viewers. There is some swearing including one use of the f-word.

It's not going to win any Oscar's or leave you gasping in awe. However, it's certainly not a terrible as some of the reviews suggest. It holds your attention and has some great jump scares. On the negative side, I'm a huge fan of the insidious movies, but this just doesn't feel like it belongs with the others.
In this movie there was an exorcism scene where it can be really scary to those who are under 12. There are no inappropriate scenes however the movie can be disturbing to some people because they talk about suicide,ghosts,etc.
Despite the PG-13 rating, Insidious is the scarier film compared to the R-rated The Conjuring film. However different the films are, there is a clear distinction when it comes to the horror in each. The long-lasting tension that remains after Insidious is much more prevalent than in The Conjuring.
In addition, the first Insidious movie has a whopping 24 jump scares. There are many reasons to feel these movies are some of the scariest, from the plausible storyline of out-of-body experiences to the from-start-to-finish terror, but it's the jump scares that really set this franchise apart.
