San (サン San), also known Princess Mononoke (もののけ姫 Mononoke Hime), is the deuteragonist and titular character of Princess Mononoke. She is the adopted human daughter of Moro and the sister of her two pups. She has a very mild attitude and a deep distrust for the humans.

Princess Mononoke may not be a spirit herself but she is a clear reference to another, fearsome spirit in Japanese folklore. The Mononoke refers to three different kinds of spirits, including one of vengeance, the onryo. The titular character of Princess Mononoke has vengeance as a core character trait.
San finally admitted that she does love Ashitaka and he means so much to her, however she could not forgive the entire human race for destroying the forest and still continues to live part of the forest with her wolf brothers Yama and Moru.

Ashitaka and San can't live together, even if they choose to live rather than die for their beliefs in the end. Their allegiances are to different factions. Despite being a human, San is brought up by Moro, thus placing her on the side of animals, spirit, and nature.
