Doolittle, though, is always assumed to have been an entirely fictional character; the romantic dream, initially, of the playwright George Bernard Shaw and then, later, the heroine of the hit Lerner and Loewe musical, My Fair Lady.
As no doubt most already know, “My Fair Lady” was based on the play “Pygmalion” by George Bernard Shaw. It told the story of a proper English gentleman who attempts to transform a scruffy, Cockney girl into a proper “lady.” The original play premiered in Vienna in 1913 and in America a year later.

Henry Higgins did remain in Eliza Doolittle's life, but Shaw was insistent on the fact that they were no match romantically, that they remained purely friends who saw each other as sparring partners in wit and cleverness.
This depiction is important because Shaw maintains later in his epilogue that one of the reasons for Eliza's rejection of the possibility of marriage to Higgins is that she could never live up to Mrs. Higgins' standards, that she could never equal Mrs. Higgins' grasp of life.
In the alternate ending to Pygmalion, Eliza does not marry, but she goes back to Professor Higgins. In the original play, Eliza is set to marry Freddy Eynsford-Hill. In some of the movie versions of the play, the ending was changed to a supposedly 'happy' ending, with Eliza coming back to Higgins.
She throws Higgins' slippers at him in a rage because she does not know what is to become of her, thereby bewildering him. He suggests she marry somebody. She returns him the hired jewelry, and he accuses her of ingratitude.
Who does Eliza choose to marry at the end of the play?
Eliza married Freddy in Pygmalian but in My Fair Lady, she came back to Higgins. The question of marriage is left open when they curtain closes. Eliza, in Shaw's play, chose Freddy because she could see that he cared for her deeply and would be sure to take care of her.
In the end, Eliza finds the strength to explain her disquiet to Higgins, who listens but ultimately denies everything. When she realizes that she will never change him, Eliza says goodbye — permanently.

The /t/ sound in the word 'tea' is made with the tongue up behind the front teeth, but this was not what the good professor appeared to be saying. Professor Higgins also stuffed Eliza's mouth with marbles and had her speak. Presumably, this was to help her enunciate more clearly.

Higgins denies any difference in treatment, and Eliza announces she will marry Freddy because he loves her. She says she was foolish to think she needed Higgins and will never see him again ("Without You"). Henry Higgins realizes his attachment to Eliza ("I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face").
Higgins counters, however, that he can't turn her "soul" on, and he says, furthermore, that he values quality more than service, and he points out that Eliza cannot buy a claim on him "by fetching my slippers and my spectacles." In fact, her "little dog's tricks of fetching and carrying slippers" can in no way compare ...
My Fair Lady tries to offer the best of both worlds by adapting the original ending, but stopping short of having Eliza leave once more. It makes the ending somewhat ambiguous but heavily implies that the two will remain together, despite Higgins' nasty shortcomings.
What is the difference between Pygmalion and My Fair Lady?
The main difference is that in the original version of Pygmalion, Eliza leaves Higgins to marry Freddy. In My Fair Lady, she stays with Higgins. Other than those differences, the stories are basically the same.
At that moment, Higgins returns, looking for his slippers, which Eliza hurls at him with all her force. He is totally baffled by her display of anger. He is furthermore astounded by her calling him a "selfish brute" who is ready to throw her back into the gutter now that she has won his bet for him.
