Thirty years after its release – it reached UK cinemas on 27 March 1992 – My Own Private Idaho is a foundational text for the sad and queer. Isolation, longing and unrequited love form its scaffolding; Phoenix's street hustler Mike is its fragile nexus. He yearns for the mother who abandoned him.
At the end of the film, Mike is once again alone, lying unconscious on the highway. The occupants of the first car that stops steal his shoes and leave. A second car pulls up, and the driver gets out, picks him up, deposits him in the backseat, and drives off. It's the last we see of Mike.
"My Own Private Idaho" is a poetic and bittersweet road movie, and Van Sant's masterpiece. Here in Brazil it received a bad title, "Garotos de Programa" (literally, "Rent Boys").
