This is at the very end of the novel. Of the late Gatsby, Tom says, “That fellow had it coming to him. He threw dust in your eyes just like he did in Daisy's….” And that's why it matters that Nick is gay and in love with Gatsby: because Tom's assessment is spot-on, but Nick will never admit it.
This inner conflict is symbolized throughout the book by Nick's romantic affair with Jordan Baker. He is attracted to her vivacity and her sophistication just as he is repelled by her dishonesty and her lack of consideration for other people.
Nick is particularly taken with Gatsby and considers him a great figure. He sees both the extraordinary quality of hope that Gatsby possesses and his idealistic dream of loving Daisy in a perfect world.
Relationship 1: Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby. The relationship at the very heart of The Great Gatsby is, of course, Gatsby and Daisy, or more specifically, Gatsby's tragic love of (or obsession with) Daisy, a love that drives the novel's plot.
What is the relationship between Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby?
Towards the beginning of the book, Gatsby and Nick have a very reserved and cordial relationship. They are friendly, but Nick feels as though Gatsby is hiding something and that he can't be trusted. After Gatsby finds out that Nick is Daisy's cousin, they begin spending more time together.
Nick does not like Gatsby at first, feeling as though he likes to garnish the truth to make his life seem more exciting, but over time, the two form an unlikely but solid bond. Nick facilitates the reunion of Gatsby and Daisy but remains an observer in their meetings, trying not to get too involved.
Without giving too much of the story away—in part because it describes almost any budding author, with that slight touch of autism that never quite connects with the world except through imagination and writing—Carraway eventually winds up back in New York.
Daisy does not want to be seen attending Gatsby's funeral since she does care about her image, despite the fact that she has never loved Tom. As a result, she makes the decision to abstain out of concern that she would damage both her connection with Tom and her standing in the eyes of the general public.
Gatsby's funeral is ironic because only three people attend, while enormous crowds attended his parties. Despite being a popular figure in the social scene, once Gatsby passes, neither Daisy, his business partner Henry Wolfsheim, nor any of his partygoers seem to remember him or care.
Tom is magnitudes of order wealthier than Gatsby. Note, in the initial party scene we discover that Gatsby's library is full of “blank” books: nice spines no substance (metaphor anyone). Gatsby does have…. shirts—so many shirts.
The ellipsis that is placed at the end of the elevator scene has almost as much impact on the story as if Fitzgerald had explicitly states that Nick and Mr. McKee slept together, if one were to read it that way. The ellipsis in itself is an innuendo for having a sexual encounter.
Apparently, he started off penniless and made his money selling illegal, over-the-counter liquor in his drug-store empire during the first two years of prohibition. Read: Invest in pricey cognac? Explanation: In the movie adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is depicted as being in a mental institution. While the film doesn't enumerate all of his symptoms, hints of anxiety, depression, and possible post-traumatic stress disorder come through, given his experiences in the novel.
In The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway and Daisy Buchanan are related; they are second cousins once removed. Moreover, Nick had met Tom, Daisy's husband, in college. He mentions this connection at the very beginning of the first chapter, when he describes his meeting with them at their mansion in East Egg.
"And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." This line works on a few different thematic levels at the end of the novel: It sums up the story of the novel, as Gatsby has been trying to work hard enough to both erase and reclaim his past with Daisy; he is unable to do either.
Three days after the murder of Gatsby, a telegram from his father, 'signed Henry C. Gatz' arrives and, a few days later, Mr. Gatz arrives at the mansion.
She betrays him by being her cowardly self. She tried once to stand up for her love of him when they first met, but her life is more complicated now with an aggressive, domineering husband and a child. She doesn't have any support -other than Nick, her distant cousin, to help her do the right thing.
What mental illness does Nick have in The Great Gatsby?
Also, it should be noted that though Nick was in a sanitarium, he wasn't "crazy." He was diagnosed with things such as anxiety and depression. Speaking of which, The diagnostics list and suggestion by the doctor to "write it all down" was wildly historically inaccurate for the '20s or '30s.
Many people could fall within this spectrum without even being completely aware of it. One that shows many signs of mild autism through social behaviors is James Gatz, also known as Jay Gatsby, the titular character in F.

Why did Daisy marry Tom? Even though she was still in love with Gatsby, Daisy most likely married Tom because she knew he could provide her with more material comforts. In Chapter 4 Jordan recounts how, the day before the wedding, she found Daisy drunk, sobbing, and clutching a letter.

Jay Gatsby's “old sport” reflects his way of life: familiarity, snobbery, ridicule, and failure. His way of life is condensed into his repeated “old sport”; in other words, “old sport” is the essence of Jay Gatsby.
