Gondor was founded by the brothers Isildur and Anárion, exiles from the downfallen island kingdom of Númenor. Along with Arnor in the north, Gondor, the South-kingdom, served as a last stronghold of the Men of the West.
Upon arrival to Middle Earth, Elendil united the colonists from his ships with the Middle Men of the land, where two kingdoms were established: Gondor and Arnor, the Realms in Exile. Minas Tirith was built by the Numenoreans following their downfall, as well as Osgiliath, Minas Morgul and Annuminas.
History. Aragorn is a direct descendent of the Faithful Numenoreans from the line of Elendil. Because he is a Numenorean, he is related distantly to Elrond through Elros. Aragorn was born in the year TA 2931 to the Ranger Arathorn and his wife Gilraen.

Isildur was born in Númenor in the year SA 3209 of the Second Age. His younger brother Anárion was born in SA 3219. They lived at the haven of Rómenna on the east coast of the island of Númenor. Their father was Elendil and their grandfather was Amandil, the Lord of Andúnië.

The Numenorean bit is somewhat of a red herring - Numenoreans (other than Elros only) were not Half-Elven. The issue comes from the fact that the whole Half-Elven thing was… complicated.
Númenóreans were not immortal as the Elves or Ainur, however in gratitude for their service during the War of Wrath, they were blessed with extended lifespans averaging three times those of other men. Those descended from the House of Elros could live for around 400-500 years.

Elros, the twin brother of Elrond, became the first king of Númenor, marking the beginning of Aragorn's kingly lineage. Elros was approximately the 63rd great-grandfather to Aragorn. This also means that Elrond was his equally distant great-uncle, making Arwen (his wife) his first cousin, 64 times removed.

The Valar also gave the Edain substantially longer lifespans than those of Men remaining in Middle-earth, and Elros and his descendants had the longest lives of all the people. Elros founded the realm of Númenor and became its first King in the year 32 of the Second Age.
However, he does not possess the ability to live forever, and he cannot choose to be mortal or immortal like Arwen, the half-Elf he loves and eventually claims as his wife. Because Aragorn is mortal and Arwen chose to remain in Gondor and become mortal, their son, Eldarion, is mortal as well, despite his Elven lineage.

As his "lifeforce" is imbude in the ring which prevents him from going into the Elven afterlife, and as such keeps him in the mortal plane. But he is a wraith in the first game, before his new ring is ever created. The ritual done to Tallion at the beginning of Shadow of Mordor summoned Celebrimbor into Tallion's body.
Bloodlines are very important in Tolkien's stories, and it makes a lot of sense that Sauron would fear the great-grandson of the man who cut off his hand. Aragorn carried the blood of Numenor with him. His genetic connection to the heroes of the Second Age established him as a dangerous opponent of Sauron.
Thanks to Galadriel's influence upon Lórinand, Sauron's machinations there were fruitless. She also got in contact with Númenor, having a meeting with King Aldarion when he came to Tharbad around 883-884.
