The main characters tend to remain constant across productions: the White Swan Queen Odette, Prince Siegfried, the owl-magician Baron Von Rothbart, and his Black Swan daughter Odile. Baron Von Rothbart has cursed young women so that they are swans by day and human by night, trapped in a lake deep in a forest.
Normally, “Swan Lake” viewers only have to worry about the head to head battle between Odette, the good white swan, and Odile, the evil black swan. Both are usually played by one dancer, and that held true in all these productions.

Even with Thomas Leroy's (Vincent Cassell) twisted take on "Swan Lake" in Black Swan, the same basic story is told, with Nina tasked to play the white swan and the seductive black swan. As a result, Nina performs the closing number with a stab wound in her chest, which results in her actually dying at the end.
Taking a solitary walk by the lake, the young Princess Odette encounters the wicked Von Rothbart. Overcome with fear, she turns and runs in the hope of escaping his evil power. However, she is not quick enough, and Von Rothbart casts a spell on Odette, transforming her into a swan.
Most versions of Swan Lake pit the purity of the white swans against the evil of the black-cloaked magician von Rothbart and his daughter, Odile, the Black Swan.
What are the differences between Odile and Odette?
