Protagonist Katniss Everdeen has two suitors: Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne. Some people prefer strong, hot-headed Gale, while others prefer kind, charismatic Peeta. When one closely examines both options, however, it becomes obvious that Peeta is the superior love interest.

His mother not only hitted him until leaving him with a black eye, whipped him often. And after everything he endured, he still wanted to be a good person and treated everyone with respect.
For Peeta to look like he was tortured, many think he went on an extreme diet. But in reality, they used CGI to slim his face and make him look abused and beaten.
In the end of the first book peeta had his leg cut by cato but then when he hid he covered himself with mud and stuff to camouflage and it got hella infected but Katniss found him and took care of him but then his leg got torn up by mutts yada yada yada blah blah blah we already knew this.
As she approaches him, Peeta wraps his hands around her neck and throws Katniss around the room. He begins to strangle her, nearly killing her. He is wild, unable to be stopped, at least until Boggs knocks him out with a metal tray.
The Capitol can't publicly accuse him of being a rebel, and at the same time he manages to use one of the Capitol's greatest publicity tools—his and Katniss's popularity—against it. This ability shows that he's extremely intelligent, and like the other tributes, he's not afraid to try to hurt the Capitol.
Ultimately, in Mockingjay, it was undeniable that Katniss was completely in love with Peeta. Even though both Gale and Peeta are great men who wanted the best for Katniss, there's no doubt Peeta was kinder, and more loyal and understanding.
