Who is the first Latina princess?
Princess Elena of Avalor, a "confident and compassionate teenager," will be introduced next year as Disney's first Latina princess, Nancy Kanter, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Disney Junior Worldwide announced today.
It is a variant of Sophia, which comes directly from the Greek word σοφία, meaning “wisdom.” While both spellings are popular, Sofia is more fashionable in Italy and throughout the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds. It is also the capital of Bulgaria and the name of arthouse film director Sofia Coppola.
According to a Disney spokeswoman, Sofia has a mixed fairy-tale heritage; her mother and father are from Galdiz (which is based on Spain) and Freezenburg (which is based on Scandinavia), respectively.
