Rodan, also dubbed as Titanus Rodan and the Fire Demon, is a major antagonist in the 2019 sci-fi action film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the third installment of the MonsterVerse franchise. He is a fiery pterosaur-like Titan seen by some ancient cultures as a god of destruction.
Rodan is depicted as a colossal, prehistoric, irradiated species of Pteranodon. In 2014, IGN ranked Rodan as #6 on their "Top 10 Japanese Movie Monsters" list, while Complex listed the character as #15 on its "The 15 Most Badass Kaiju Monsters of All Time" list.
In the original Rodan, the two Rodans are depicted as horrific and dangerous creatures who, despite their destructive nature, care deeply for each other and are unwilling to live without the other.
With the ability to level entire cities simply by flying, Rodan was dreaded as a destroyer by ancient humans, who dubbed him the "Fire Demon." Born in the El Nido del Demonio volcano in Isla de Mara, Mexico, a containment facility was established there by Monarch in 1991.
Rodan's primary weapons are his speed and agility; he can create hurricane-force winds and destructive sonic booms in his wake by flying at supersonic speeds at low altitude.
When Godzilla is nearly killed by Super Mechagodzilla, Rodan willingly sacrifices his life to save Godzilla so that he can raise BabyGodzilla in his place.
Rodan is a pteranodon monster living inside a volcano, and is arguably Godzilla's most important ally. They first meet as foes in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, but their fight ends with the two joining forces against Ghidorah.
In subsequent films in the Showa series, Rodan is seen as a loyal ally of Godzilla who assists him and the other Earth monsters in fighting off King Ghidorah.
Rodan is also weak to mind control, having fallen under the spell of Xiliens in Invasion of Astro-Monster and Godzilla: Final Wars and the Kilaaks in Destroy All Monsters. This suggests that other creatures or civilizations could gain control of Rodan provided they have the correct equipment.
A carryover from the Cretaceous Period, pterosaur kaiju Rodan has terrorized Japan's skies since 1956. Sometimes fighting Godzilla, while other times allying itself with the King of the Monsters to overcome greater threats, Rodan supersonically soars with the times.
Rodan was defined by his crush on Mothra, which makes him get jealous every time Mothra dates someone else. He is quite shy around Mothra, since he loves her. He speaks in a voice as if he is whispering loudly. He is often short-tempered and aggressive, even fighting his best friend Godzilla on two occasions.
Mothra doesn't simply die in King of the Monsters - she transfers her life force to Godzilla. The film even has the atomic pulse Godzilla sends forth to kill Ghidorah briefly taking the shape of Mothra's wings and her chirping is heard when he attacks.
Rodan. Originally, she said that she and Rodan were best friends, but Rodan thought it was not enough, because of his crush. Then she introduced him to her boyfriend, Ghidorah, causing Rodan to snap in anger. After breaking up with Ghidorah, she fell in love as well.
Rodan originally thought Ghidorah was merely a threat that he could handle. When Ghidorah easily overpowered Rodan, Rodan felt fear and didn't want to be killed. And also, Rodan listens to the Alpha.
Mothra Might Be Peaceloving, But She's Indubitably Overpowered. The iconic and ancient Mothra is known for being one of the good guys in Godzilla lore. She's referred to in multiple properties as a protector of humanity. As her name suggests, Mothra is a moth, albeit one that is a behemoth in size.
Rodan and Mothra were finally together forever. However, the Monster Island Buddies' victory celebration was cut short as with the death of Grand King Ghidorah, all hell had literally broke loose.
Strength is subjective in the kaiju world because the stats on these creatures are all over the place and most are not accurate. There is only one that constantly reigns supreme in physical strength. That is of course King Ghidorah the alien dragon from the deep cosmos.
Anguirus was reintroduced in Destroy All Monsters as an ally and best friend of Godzilla living with him on Monsterland, a role that Anguirus maintained throughout Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
I love Rodan I really do. King Kong is going to win if we are including the MV incarnations, let's be honest. Kong as we see from the trailers is already proven to be a match for Godzilla. His punch was able to at least damage him.
Ghidorah is Godzilla's greatest foe, and it isn't close. This alien creature sports three deadly serpent-like heads, it can fly, and it's capable of withstanding everything Godzilla can throw at it. Though Godzilla manages to win in the end, it's usually by the closest of margins.
Biollante is a genetically-modified rose Kaiju hybrid created from Godzilla's DNA by the Devonians, making her Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla's half-sister. She fought against Godzilla on the Monster Islands, but was defeated and escaped into the planet's atmosphere.
What happened to Rodan can be explained by basic science: when an animal species begins living under unfamiliar, unsuitable conditions, it adapts to its environment over a great deal of time. Rodan survived simply by adapting to the volcano. As time passed, Rodan grew an outer shell of volcanic rock.
Whereas Goku learned the Kaio-Ken from King Kai, Godzilla obtained his pink form from absorbing the DNA of a fellow kaiju named Tiamat. Differing power-up circumstances aside, Krichevsky confirmed that— like Goku's Kaio-Ken — Godzilla's pink form is temporary.
