Saving Mr Banks: the true story of Walt Disney's battle to make Mary Poppins. In 1962, the author Pamela Travers – known to the public by the initials PL Travers – arrived in Los Angeles on a flight from London, her first-class ticket having been paid for by Walt Disney.
Accuracy: Mostly true. Saving Mr. Banks does paint the father, Travers Goff, a little more positively than he actually was, but the basics — i.e. that Goff was an alcoholic, failed bank manager with an immensely romantic imagination — are all correct. Even the pear flashback toward the end has some basis in reality.
In her will, PL Travers left her literary estate (including the copyright in Mary Poppins) upon a settlement, the beneficiaries of which were her descendants and a charity she had set up.
Saving Mr Banks is a dramatised biography targeting an adult audience. The movie is engrossing and emotionally intense. Emma Thompson gives a standout performance as a deeply unhappy woman who is severely haunted by her past.

The Bank. Mr George Banks and, later, Michael Banks work at the fictional Dawes, Tomes, Mousely, Grubbs Fidelity Fiduciary Bank in the City. The Bank of England and Threadneedle Street in the City of London were used as locations for scenes outside the bank in Mary Poppins Returns.
We realize that Mary Poppins came not to fix the children, nor was this their journey, but to fix Mr. Banks, a character, dragged down by conflicting loyalties. The wind changes and Mary Poppins must now leave the Banks children, presumably to help assist another family.
In a good way, Mary Poppins' umbrella keeps her in check. Mary guided the children, while the umbrella guided her. Often times, it introduced Mary to her softer side. Because Mary had a strong-headed disposition, the umbrella helped her to relax once in a while by taking her over the rooftops of London.
George Banks: Male, 40s. The father to Jane and Michael Banks, is a banker to the very fiber of his being. Demanding "precision and order" in his household, he is a pipe-and-slippers man who doesn't have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew.
Banks is the patriarch of the London family that Mary Poppins helps in the book and movie. Author P.L. Travers based the Mr. Banks character in part on her own father, Travers Goff, portrayed by Colin Farrell in the film Saving Mr.
"Jack is a lamplighter. He apprenticed under Bert from the original films so he knows all about Mary," said Miranda. "So it's really nice to play the Bert position in this film. You kind of get to go on all the fun adventures with the Banks family."
