It's a beautiful, tender film that manages to be sad without being mawkish, funny without detracting from the emotion and with far greater depth than expected. Unfolding the story of Walt Disney's attempt to persuade P.L. Travers to sell him the rights to her beloved Mary Poppins, Saving Mr.
The movie is outstanding as are Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as P L Travers (real name is Helen Goff). Still, it is a sad story that recounts P L Travers painful childhood, living with an alcoholic father with a tortured joie de vie, and a mother who attempts suicide.
Saving Mr. Banks is lovely in many ways, including its lead actors, Thompson and Hanks, who are irresistibly winning. But it's a tale of two stories, both of which are indulged, making for a tonally uneven film. To start, the movie Mary Poppins is a fairy tale.
Saving Mr Banks has several emotionally intense scenes relating to self-harm, accidental injury related to alcohol abuse, attempted suicide and child abuse. For example: A flashback scene shows P.L. Travers as a small girl watching her father in his bank office shouting at an imaginary enemy and throwing papers around.
Saving Mr. Banks grossed $83.3 million in North America and $34.6 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $117.9 million, against a budget of $35 million.
Saving Mr. Banks shows that many writers use they personal experience and life and become a part of the author. It is hard for writers to let go and particularly for Travers, as she has so much invested in Mary Poppins, so much of herself in it. Her books allowed her to have some wish fulfilment.
Disney was a shy, self-deprecating and insecure man in private but adopted a warm and outgoing public persona. He had high standards and high expectations of those with whom he worked. Although there have been accusations that he was racist or antisemitic, they have been contradicted by many who knew him.
Saving Mr. Banks is based on a true story. Well, it's based on a true story the way the movie Mary Poppins is based on the book Mary Poppins — which is to say loosely, and without some of the really unusual and intense juicy parts. The movie tells the story of author P.L.
What are the unsettling images in Saving Mr. Banks?
Saving Mr. Banks is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for thematic elements including some unsettling images. Violence: A character with an alcohol addiction behaves erratically, smacks his head against a wall, and falls from a stage. A character coughs up blood, which is seen on his face and handkerchief.
Accuracy: Mostly true. Saving Mr. Banks does paint the father, Travers Goff, a little more positively than he actually was, but the basics — i.e. that Goff was an alcoholic, failed bank manager with an immensely romantic imagination — are all correct. Even the pear flashback toward the end has some basis in reality.
George Banks: Male, 40s. The father to Jane and Michael Banks, is a banker to the very fiber of his being. Demanding "precision and order" in his household, he is a pipe-and-slippers man who doesn't have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew.
Both Mary Poppins and Pennywise have the same power: to use what lurks in children's minds either for good or evil. Mary Poppins taps into their imagination, while Pennywise manipulates their fear. They also have similar skill sets.
Dawes Sr. is the main antagonist of the 1964 Disney film Mary Poppins and the overarching antagonist of its 2018 sequel Mary Poppins Returns. He was the former director of Fiduciary Fidelity Bank who served as George Banks's former boss until his death.
