Murphy appeared as Scarecrow — a psychologist in Gotham City who uses various gases to induce fear within his victims — in all three of Nolan's Batman movies.
That was his only scene in The Dark Knight Rises and his fate was left unknown – however, it's believed he was eventually arrested by the Gotham City Police Department after Bane and Talia al Ghul were killed and Batman flew away with the bomb that was supposed to destroy Gotham.
Scarecrow rejoins the new Secret Society of Super Villains, and is part of the assault on the Secret Six (Villains United #6). He is caught in an explosion caused by Parademon. He is later seen in Villains United Special #1, alive and well.
Jim Carrey as Edward Nygma / The Riddler: A former Wayne Enterprises employee, Edward resigns after his newest invention is personally rejected by Bruce. He becomes the villainous Riddler, leaving riddles and puzzles at scenes of crime.
Deathstroke, aka Slade Wilson, is one of Batman's most fearsome enemies. His combat prowess as well as tactical understanding, are unmatched. Deathstroke is a highly trained assassin and killer who, thanks to experimental military techniques, possesses unparalleled power, speed, as well as reflexes.
His background is similar to his comic book counterpart; he is portrayed as a psychiatrist who is obsessed with fear, and who was fired from his teaching job for experimenting on his students. He sought revenge on the superiors who fired him, using his Fear Toxin.
His face has an even more a skeletal like structure, with some of his face peeling or falling off, and (as evident in the Arkham Knight Toy), his left leg also needs braces. So clearly he was heavily injured in that fight, and no doubt that he blames batman for it, fueling his hate for him.
It is to be expected that this villain who specialized in the fears of the people had his own fear that tormented his soul. This fear was intended for the one who was willing to disrupt his plans: Batman.
Unfortunately, The Batman was vetoed from using the Scarecrow despite having already been designed due the imposed "Bat-embargo" (an embargo related to the Batman franchise which previously restricted the appearance of many Batman-related characters in Justice League Unlimited).
What happened to Scarecrow after The Dark Knight Rises?
Although the Scarecrow's fate was left ambiguous at the end of The Dark Knight Rises, Cillian Murphy believes that Scarecrow survived the film's events and is still out there.
By the time of The Dark Knight, he has made peace with his new mental state. Scarecrow isn't terrified of Batman anymore. He is just afraid enough to know that when Batman shows up, the only sane choice is to flee.

Aquaman outclasses Scarecrow in every facet of the fight. He's dramatically more physically capable, and his willpower as a seasoned Atlantean warrior makes the efficiency of the gas a tall order. However, what seals Scarecrow's fate is Arthur's own ability to influence the minds of his opponent.
It should be noted that those messages only appeared after a certain point in the game and confirmed that Scarecrow was still alive, and sought revenge on Batman.
