He is slowly revealed to be responsible for all the events in the film including corrupting Hal Jordan and assisting him in his ultimate plot to destroy the universe.
Thaal Sinestro (/sɪˈnɛstroʊ/) (or simply Sinestro) is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, particularly those featuring Green Lantern. Sinestro is a former Green Lantern Corps member who was dishonorably discharged for abusing his power.
First the greatest of the Green Lanterns and then their greatest enemy, Sinestro remains one of the DC Universe's most enduring antagonists. After becoming a Lantern to further instill order over the galaxy, Thaal Sinestro put his homeworld of Korugar under his own totalitarian control.
Sinestro's determination to preserve order caused him to act more as a dictator than a protector, conquering his own home planet in the process. Why did Sinestro betray the Green Lantern?
Sinestro is the main antagonist of Green Lantern: First Flight. He was one of the greatest Green Lanterns in history, but he believed that the Guardians were unfit to keep peace and order across the universe with them simply capturing and arresting criminals instead of exterminating them, and so he betrayed them.
It is more than a desire for revenge against the Green Lantern Corps that has caused Sinestro to especially hate and strike at Hal Jordan. It is far more personal. Jordan was not corrupted by the ring as Sinestro was. Jordan was hailed as the greatest Green Lantern of them all.
The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott's weakness to wood stemmed from his subconscious belief that his powers couldn't affect the material. The later Lanterns' weakness to the color yellow came from the Fear entity trapped within the Green Lantern Corps' central power battery.

Unfortunately, Hal Jordan turned out to be more than a match for Sinestro. The two of them fought with their power rings until it came down to a brawl with bare fists on Oa. The fight came down to Hal getting Sinestro in a headlock and snapping his neck.
As he began his rise to power, Sinestro and his wife Arin Sur (who is the sister of Abin Sur) began arguing about what he was doing. That, coupled with the numerous threats that were made against Sinestro and his family, caused his wife to leave with Soranik.
What we learn through their story is that Hal and Sinestro have similarities and differences that make up their unique friendship, and bonds them as each other's greatest foe but also their greatest ally.
Modern Shazam stories depict Mary as Billy Batson's older foster sister, living together in the Vasquez family home with four other siblings. Sinestro didn't really turn evil. He became a villain. He wishes to impose order upon the universe. He might seem evil - he's manipulative and controlling - but at his heart, he has the best interests of everyone under his protection in his heart (most of all his own people and Korugar).
Of all the members of the Justice League, no two heroes are more at odds with one another than Batman and Green Lantern. Why do they seem to despise one another so much? Much of it has to do with their methods of seeking justice being pretty diametrically opposed as well as their personalities.
What Makes Him Pure Evil? He instigated the years long Rann-Thanagar War through a series of false-flag attacks including destroying Rann's capital city and sabotaging any peace talks. One attack alone claimed hundreds of lives.
