The Hobbit dragon is the most famous of Tolkien's dragons. The name Smaug, is derived from a Germanic word that means "to squeeze through a hole." He is a large red dragon, and the considered the last 'great' dragon of the Third Age. He is evil and very strong, as evidenced by his ability to conquer two cities.
Smaug is a dragon whose evil, like Gollum's, is indicated by his isolation. He lives alone in the Lonely Mountain, his only purpose to guard the treasure he stole from the dwarves during the reign of Thorin's grandfather.
Then, he proceeded to invade and burn the Kingdom of Erebor, killing many Dwarves in the process. Smaug, left those who fled Erebor, because the treasure was his goal, from the beginning. After these events, we understand that Smaug is, at least, Neutral Evil.
Smaug is the main antagonist of the 1937 classic fantasy novel The Hobbit by the late J.R.R. Tolkien, and its many adaptations including the 1977 Rankin/Bass animated film adaptation, the 1990 graphic novel, and the 2003 video game.
Smaug is aware of the return of Sauron, and was apparently intent on joining forces with him (although there was some amount of confusion as to whether the dragon's motives for an alliance with Sauron were).
Smaug could easily have cut through the armies of Mordor, and delayed the invasion of Middle-earth by years. So it wasn't in Sauron's interest to take on the dragon, but that doesn't mean he saw it as a lost cause, as he fully planned on creating an alliance.

Why did Thorin go crazy? Thorin fell victim to the sickness of greed. Dwarves are known for being greedy and proud, and when he realized the treasure of Erebor was his, including the Arkenstone, he became ill with Dragon Sickness. He began to value his wealth more than his friends, family, and own safety.
Smaug's wealth is estimated at $62 billion. Now, here's the kicker. According to Forbes, there are 15 people in the world with more money than Scrooge McDuck. More money than the dragon Smaug.
