Shortly after acquiring Lucasfilm, Disney announced that almost all Star Wars material outside the six movies and The Clone Wars was to be reclassified as “Legends.” In other words, they made the books, video games, and sourcebooks non-canon in one fell swoop.
In order to make new Star Wars movies and TV shows, Disney made the difficult choice to remove the old Expanded Universe from canon – but the wisdom it holds pertaining to the galaxy far, far away is now more important than ever.

It was decided shorlty after that every book, comic , video game, TV show and movie that weren't part of the Skywalker Saga (Episodes 1-6) we're no longer canon. The only exception was The Clone Wars animated series because it was still releasing episodes after the transfer date.

From 1976 to 2014, the term Expanded Universe (EU) was an umbrella term for all officially licensed Star Wars storytelling material set outside the events depicted within the theatrical films, including novels, comics, and video games.
The decision of labeling the old EU as non-canon will forever remain controversial, but it's important to point out that George Lucas never thought of the Expanded Universe as being part of his Star Wars story.
Basically, everything except those items marked with an "Infinity" logo (i.e. the Star Wars Tales comics) is considered canon. There is a hierarchy -- the movies, novelizations, radio dramas come first. Then everything else. If something in a novelization contradicts the movies, then we defer to the movies.
Canon is everything that has been made post-Disney buyout as well as all of the movies and the Clone Wars show. This includes any books, comics, and games released after 2012.

Previous to that appearance, the developers of the show had considered and rejected for Darth Bane to appear during the third season's Mortis Trilogy arc alongside Darth Revan, acting as an influence on the Son (an embodiment of the dark side). For now, this serves as Bane's only canon appearance.
