The X-Men's Beast Has Fully Embraced Being a Villain - But He Has One Last Chance to be a Hero. Wolverine #31 solidifies the position of the X-Men's Beast as an all out villain - but it also grants him one last chance to be a hero. Beast has been part of the X-Men, the Avengers, the Defenders, the first X-Factor, and even the Uncanny Inhumans. Unlike other heroes, Beast isn't some honorary member of these teams.
Introduced in X-MEN: ALPHA (1995) #1, Dark Beast is a version of McCoy from the Age of Apocalypse timeline. In that alternate reality, McCoy worked with Apocalypse as a geneticist and experimented on various mutants. Eventually, the villain ended up on Earth-616, where he served as a recurring enemy of the X-Men.
Quasimodo tried to drain Hank's life force, wanting to gain his healing factor. With Beast's metabolism, Quasimodo reasoned that he might become human. Beast was almost completely drained, an event that physically altered him once again. Hank's healing factor was gone, plus his fur changed color.

He was later recruited by the Illuminati (New Avengers by Jonathan Hickman) to prevent the end of their universe. When Krakoa was established, he became reckless.
His super strength and agility have served him pretty well over the years but he's just not strong enough to really do anything to the Hulk. His acrobatic fighting style would allow him to keep ahead of the Hulk for a time but it just wouldn't be enough.
