The crowd-pleasing comedy, based on the true story of a white, wealthy quadriplegic and the black ex-con who became his unlikely caregiver and friend, burst all kinds of box-office records.
I say that in the nicest possible way. There were no real surprises, but it was a fun, feel-good movie (apart from some heavy parts dealing with quadriplegia and Kevin Hart's family situation). If you like Kevin Hart and Brian Cranston, you will probably like this movie. They were both very good in their roles.
But after caring for Phillip, Dell realizes that there are much more important things in life. He starts caring for his ex-girlfriend and becomes more present in his son's life. By the end of the film, Dell is a genuine, caring person and Phillip is a man happy to be alive.
The biggest message of “The Upside” is that we as human beings have a choice. More specifically, we have a choice in how we perceive life, regardless of the hard times we have experienced. Hart's character is an example of the person who makes the decision to make the best of his life.

The Upside is a 2017 American comedy-drama film directed by Neil Burger, written by Jon Hartmere. It is a remake of the French 2011 film The Intouchables, which was itself inspired by the lives of Abdel Sallou and Philippe Pozzo di Borgo.
But given the typical feel-good nature, it may be surprising to learn with some final text stating Dell and Phillip remain friends to this day that The Upside is based on a true story. Technically, The Upside is a remake of French film The Intouchables, with the action moved from Paris to New York.
By the time Dell meets Phillip in The Upside, Phillip's wife has already died of cancer, and it is assumed that several years had passed since then. In reality, Phillippe's wife was still alive by the time Abdel began working as his caretaker, though she did die of cancer shortly thereafter.
Dell goes to pick Philip up and return him home, but Philip chews Dell out for arranging the whole thing with Lily since he now feels like a fool. Philip then fires Dell.
The Upside appeals to mass audience erogenous zones (bankable star, humor, candy-coating issues) that's unapologetically feel-good while offering award season relief. It's a little long. The real anchor for the movie is their relationship, but it's super funny.
