Billy Loomis (Scream Big Bad) Most of the time, Ghostface isn't acting alone. In fact, in the first five films, there's only a single killer once. Yet even when Ghostface is a duo, there's typically a dominant Ghostie and someone who takes on a more expendable sidekick role.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for every single "Scream" movie, including "Scream 6." There have been 13 killers in the "Scream" movies so far. Most installments feature more than one Ghostface.
The Ghostface entity usually comprises of two people in the Scream films, so it was at one point largely referred to as the "Third Killer Theory". The exception to this was Scream 3, where only one killer is unveiled, and later Scream VI (2023).
There are six films in the Scream franchise so far with but 13 Ghostface killers altogether. Aside from Scream 3, each entry had two killers that worked together to terrorize Sidney and murder everyone around her. As such, it can be messy trying to figure out who kills who in each film.
While the Scream 2022 kills were performed by two Ghostface killers, Scream 6 was the first in the franchise to have three Ghostfaces. Playing off of the Scream 2 reveal that one Ghostface was Billy Loomis' mother, Scream 6 sees Richie's father Wayne, brother Ethan, and sister Quinn as the killers.
The Ghostfaces of Scream VI were Ethan (Jack Champion) and the presumed-dead Quinn (Liana Liberato), who had orchestrated all of the killings with the help of Detective Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney), who was secretly their father, as well as the father of Richie (Jack Quaid), the killer from the previous movie.
Charlie may have been the least likely suspect, and that's exactly how he (almost) got away with it. However, Charlie was also one of the weakest of all the Ghostfaces. Not only was he killed almost immediately by his accomplice (more on her later), but each of his kills was sloppier than the last.
Although each Ghostface killer has died after their Scream massacre, such characters maintain significant impacts on the attacks' survivors, leading to a few Ghostfaces being brought back posthumously.
Roman (Scott Foley) was the only solo Ghostface, and did it while directing (or, well, trying to direct) a new Stab movie. That's got to count for something, right!
As for why Angelina being the second killer in Scream 3 was scrapped, that's not entirely clear. All those involved have said is that producers - one assumes meaning Dimension Films bosses Harvey and Bob Weinstein - didn't like the idea, and demanded it be changed.
Ghostface was not a supernatural demon like Freddy Krueger or an unkillable bogeyman like Michael Myers — he was just a guy (or really, two guys) in a costume. Scream was a slasher, but it was also a whodunit.
Ghostface is revealed as Sidney's half-brother, film director Roman Bridger (Scott Foley), born to their mother Maureen during a two-year period when she moved to Hollywood to become an actress under the name Rina Reynolds.
Scream 3 is the only film in the franchise where only one identity is revealed as Ghostface: Roman Bridger played by Scott Foley. Roman is the main antagonist of the third installment and the fifth Ghostface murderer unmasked overall.
Scream 6 put a new spin on the franchise, as there were not one but several Scream 6 killers, the most of any Scream film, all working together to kill each victim in their unique way. The film has a total of five killers, including two that were introduced in Scream's iconic opening scene.
In the third act of Scream, when Billy Loomis and Stu Macher revealed themselves as the Ghostface killers, Billy told Sidney he killed Maureen as she was having an affair with his dad, which led to his mother abandoning him.
Scream 7 is officially happening, but fans have been stunned by two unexpected exits from the new movie. Both Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who played sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, won't be returning for the new movie.
Sidney first shocks Jill in the head with defibrillator pads, before later finishing her off with a shot to the chest. In all, Scream's Sidney Prescott killed four out of nine versions of Ghostface, though if Stu ever returns, that number would fall to three.
Roman is the most intelligent killer as he works alone, leaving no loose ends to tie up and eliminating the possibility of a partner having a change of heart. He also was the blueprint for every Ghostface, starting with Billy, but no one knew because he kept himself out of the picture until the third film.
Jason Voorhees has several advantages over Ghostface. Jason has superhuman strength and durability, making him almost invulnerable to physical attacks. This gives him a significant advantage in a fight . Additionally, Jason has the ability to regenerate from injuries that would be fatal to an human being.
Detective Bailey, Quinn Bailey, and Ethan Landry were revealed as the killers at the end of Scream 6. Their motive was revenge for Detective Bailey's son's death.
Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), the fan-favorite final girl of Scream 4, makes a lot of sense to be one of the Ghostface killers in Scream 6. Kirby was stabbed in Scream 4, and it wasn't clear whether she survived. Then, she showed up in a blink-and-you'll-miss Easter egg in 2022's Scream.
Billy and Stu killed Maureen before the events of the first film by stabbing her numerous times. Steven Orth is killed by Stu Macher. Stu and Billy attacked him off-screen, gagged him and later, while Billy was taunting Casey on the phone, Stu gutted Steve. Casey Becker is killed by Billy Loomis and Stu Macher.
Unfortunately for Scream franchise fans that may want to see Stu Macher make a comeback, Scream 6 has fairly definitively laid the theories to rest by confirming his death. There is a lingering shot in the film that shows Stu Macher's photo and confirms that he died in 1996.
