Insidious: The Red Door is a hot mess attempting to shoehorn in a plot between Father and Son. We get to waste time watching scenes while the Son is screwing around in college and going to frat parties. It completely misses what made the first three films great and feels like a flat and boring film.
The demon chases them to the red door and Josh stays behind to keep it shut so Dalton will be safe. Dalton returns to his body and paints over his red door painting with black paint, which in turns seals the real door and The Further. Josh meets his father's spirit, who guides him back to the living world.
Ultimately, the events of Insidious 2 are the reason why Josh and Renai got divorced. At the end of Insidious, it seems as though Josh has successfully rescued Dalton from The Further, however, in a shocking twist, he murders paranormal expert Elise.

Who is Josh's wife in Insidious?
The film stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, reprising their roles as Josh and Renai Lambert, a husband and wife who seek to uncover the secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.
Josh is able to travel beyond the Red Door and frees his son, but the red-faced demon isn't willing to let Dalton just walk away. In order for Dalton to safely escape the Further, Josh must use his body to block the Red Door, sacrificing himself for his son, not unlike what his own dad did.
The ending of Insidious: The Red Door is just as creepy and memorable as horror fans were hoping for, and the characters finally end up in a better, happier place... at least for now.

The movie has a few really good scares of course but overall the first movie was a lot creepier and more disturbing. In fact, you happen to know what is going on if you have seen the first movie and that's why you aren't that shocked or surprised anymore.
One of the jump scenes shows a very scary-looking red-faced demon with a striking resemblance to Darth Maul from "Star Wars", appearing suddenly behind one of the characters, this is one of the scariest moments in the film. In the beginning of the film, in the titles, something is seen moving in every shot (scary).
Despite the PG-13 rating, Insidious is the scarier film compared to the R-rated The Conjuring film. However different the films are, there is a clear distinction when it comes to the horror in each. The long-lasting tension that remains after Insidious is much more prevalent than in The Conjuring.
The Red Door overperformed despite weak reviews, scoring the second-best domestic opening of the series behind 2013's Insidious: Chapter 2 ($40.3 million), not adjusted for inflation.
What did Elise say at the end of Insidious Red Door?
Elise says she's a friend of Josh's mother, and Josh says he has so much he wishes he could tell his mother. Elise says that she'll know and that he can tell her one day.
As she packs up for the night, Josh hands her his childhood photos, but as she takes them, she gives Josh a strange and startled look, whips out her camera and snaps a photo of Josh. Furious, Josh goes in a rage and violently strangles Elise, killing her.
A voice greets him, and he turns to see Elise Rainier standing in the road. Though he met her a long time ago, he doesn't remember who she is or how she helped him, and when she tells him that she was a friend of his mother's, he laments not being able to tell her about everything he's been through.
