Frank Pentangeli is based on Joe Profaci. Profaci, as boss of the Profaci crime family, denied the Gallo brothers a cut into a racket in the early 1960s, which sparked off a revolt against Profaci's leadership.
A rift grows between Pentangeli and Michael, however, that eventually results in Pentangeli betraying the family. Pentangeli's character was created in The Godfather Part II by Coppola and Puzo due to actor Richard Castellano not reprising his role as Clemenza in the sequel.
Frank Pentangeli was written as replacement for Peter Clemenza, who was slated to appear in Part II but was cut from the film after the actor, Richard S.
