In fact, more often the story makes it clear Peter is not evil or bad in nature, his acts and actions are simply a byproduct of his immaturity: being in Neverland prevents one from aging physically, meaning he cannot change.
Instead of the mischievous but ultimately good-hearted boy we know from Disney's popular take on the character, J.M. Barrie's novel portrays Peter Pan as less of a well-meaning jokester and more of a darkly supernatural entity with a strange fixation on control.

Overall, Peter Pan's story is tragic; even with the adventures, games and fun he experiences, he cannot remember the things he has done because of his constant search for new things to keep him occupied. Peter is filling his life with fun because that is all he knows, all he wants to know, and the only thing he has.
Peter Pan ends with Wendy taking her brothers as well as the Lost Boys back to her home in Bloomsbury, and Peter Pan returning to live in Neverland. We learn that Tinker Bell dies soon after the main events of the novel, and that Peter has forgotten all about Hook, the Lost Boys, and Tinker Bell, because he is a child.
Rather than aging and being concerned about mortality, Peter Pan lives immortally in the flawed, yet exciting, land of Neverland. While readers may interpret Neverland as a heaven-like place, the story itself does not suggest that Neverland is heaven, nor that the children are dead.

In Barrie's play and his novel, Tink tried to communicate her love to Peter, but it was unrequited, too mature an emotion for the boy who never wanted to grow up. The implied romance was more emphatic, but the visual medium of the animated movie allowed it to be more visceral.
However, even Barrie's Peter Pan play retained some of the darker tones of the first novel. Peter Pan longed for Wendy's company but realized she would eventually grow old as well. The sentiment of solitude would prompt him to murder pirates and Lost Boys as they started to age.
