This jinx was used by Quirinus Quirrell on Harry Potter's Nimbus 2000 in early November 1991, during a Quidditch match. It was an attempt to murder Harry for Lord Voldemort. No one in the stands detected Quirrell of using this jinx, except Professor Severus Snape, who attempted to save Harry with a counter-curse.
History. In early November 1991, Severus Snape used this counter-curse to counteract Quirinus Quirrell's broom jinx on Harry Potter's broomstick during a game of Quidditch at Hogwarts.
However, turns out that it was Professor Quirinus Quirrell (under Voldemort's command) who was casting the spell for Harry's broom to spin out of control. Snape, on the other hand, was casting a counter-spell to protect Harry from the jinx, thus saving his life.
The truth came out when Professor Quirrell admitted to Harry that he'd jinxed the broom and claimed he'd have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for those meddling counter-curses.
In an interview, Rowling described Snape's character as an "antihero". She has said that she drew inspiration for Snape's character from a disliked teacher from her own childhood, and described Snape as a horrible teacher, saying the "worst, shabbiest thing you can do" as a teacher is to bully students.

Was Snape actually a good guy?
Snape's actions, such as shielding Harry and his friends from harm and hesitating when killing Dumbledore, further demonstrate that he was not a villain but had a deeper plan to earn Voldemort's trust.
Snape was so cruel to him all because of the fact that Lily would have survived if the prophecy was about him instead of Harry. NEVILLE HAD NO CONTROL OVER THIS. Harry had come from a home where he was ignored, abused, treated like less than a household pet.
Did Snape know Harry was under the invisibility cloak?
Dumbledore was doing James a favour by helping him pass down the Invisibility Cloak to his son Harry. Snape definitely knew because in book 4 when Harry sees crouch in Snapes office, he's in his invisibility cloak. As soon as snape sees the golden egg and the map he says 'potters here' to mad eye. While through most of the series Snape seems to be horrible to Harry and possibly trying to get him into Voldemort's hands, it's revealed at the end of the series that Snape was actually helping watch out for Harry.
Midpoint: During the Quidditch match, Harry's new Nimbus 2000 broom goes haywire. Hermione sees Snape casting a spell and, believing he's jinxing Harry. She lights his cloak on fire with her wand.
Sectumsempra was a curse invented by Severus Snape that lacerated the target and caused severe haemorrhaging. Snape created it as a student of Hogwarts, with the intention of using it against his enemies, likely including the Marauders, with it becoming one of his specialities.
In the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie, Snape showed how much he loved Harry, providing him with his memories and showing that he saw Lily in him, his last words echoing this: "You have your mother's eyes."
Sectumsempra curse lacerates the target and leads to severe hemorrhaging. In J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, Harry maintained he didn't intend to wound Draco mortally and reiterated he didn't know what the spell did.
This replica was placed in the case normally holding the real sword, so that the real one could eventually be given to Harry Potter to assist his search for Voldemort's Horcruxes. The replica made its way in time into Bellatrix Lestrange's vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank.

Why didn't Snape tell Harry he was protecting him?

Why didn't Harry get in trouble for using sectumsempra?
When Harry critically injured Draco Malfoy with the Sectumsempra curse, it was actually enough to have him expelled, as Professor Minerva McGonagall stated Harry was lucky not to have been, due to Snape giving lenience to prevent others from finding out that he was the one who invented the curse.
To defend her students, McGonagall casts a series of spells Snape's way, but he manages to evade all of them before flying away. But what McGonagall doesn't know is that Snape is actually a double agent working for Dumbledore, so he has no intention of harming her.
