Tarzan (John Clayton II, Viscount Greystoke) is a fictional character, a feral child raised in the African jungle by the Mangani great apes; he later experiences civilization, only to reject it and return to the wild as a heroic adventurer.
Since Lord Mildin stranded in 1868 and the first Tarzan book (by Edgar Rice Burroughs) was published in 1912, some people theorized that the story of Tarzan was actually based on Lord Mildin. Another one of these real life Tarzans is a Vietnamese man named Ho van Lang.
Tarzan (White-skin) is his ape name; his English name is John Clayton, Lord Greystoke (the formal title is Viscount Greystoke according to Burroughs in Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle; Earl of Greystoke in later, non-canonical sources, notably the 1984 movie Greystoke).
Edgar Rice Burrough's masterpiece, Tarzan Of The Apes first appeared in the pulp "All-Star Magazine" in 1912 and was published as a book in 1914. Christened Tarzan (white-skin) by his ape mother Kala, the character was enormously popular and Burroughs wrote 24 sequels up into the 1940s.
Mangani is the name of a fictional species of great apes in the Tarzan novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, and of the invented language used by these apes. Probably the biggest misconception of them all: the “great apes” who raised Tarzan, although almost always depicted as plain old gorillas, were in fact a distinct fictional species that referred to themselves as the Mangani and to their larger enemies/cousins, the gorillas, as the Bolgani.
