In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, Katniss states that Cato killed Thresh. However, this is not in-line with the film continuity, as Thresh was killed by the wolf mutts in the first film.
Katniss and Peta only learn of Thresh's death when his picture is projected in the sky. However, in Mockingjay, the third book of the trilogy, Katniss reveals that Thresh died in a battle with Cato, one of the Career Tributes.
The mutts were responsible for killing Thresh as well as mauling Cato. At the end of the scene, the muttations ran off into the woods, and Katniss put Cato out of his misery much sooner.
Cato touched the blood and shoved Thresh into a lake. Thresh hit his head against a rock and drowned, his head full of blood and the cannon sounded. Cato smacked his hands.
No purpose, no excitement. Just Dead. Maybe he is just realizing that he could not win and that he knew Katniss would kill him and he could not win without clove. So he kinda just gave up because there was no use in trying to win if he did not get to be with clove in the end.
Prim (Willow Shields) was an important character, as Katniss only volunteered in the games to protect her. Arguably, many viewers find that the fixation on Prim's death took away the due respect that other characters deserve. But as the films follow Katniss, Prim's absence affects her most profoundly.
He also gave Katniss a chance to run free instead of killing her as a peace offering for protecting Rue. Cause of Death: Once he avenged Rue, Thresh was killed off-screen by a pack of wolf-like mutts designed by Gamemakers to hurry along the end of the games.

They wonder how Haymitch won the Hunger Games, and Peeta guesses he must have outsmarted the other tributes. That night, Thresh's picture is projected in the sky. Thresh is dead, and the news upsets Katniss. If they didn't win, she wanted Thresh to, because he let her live and because of Rue.
At the very end of the book, we have Katniss and Peeta huddled together waiting out Cato's death as he's being mauled by mutts inside the Cornucopia. Katniss shoots him in the face, effectively ending his life.
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
These wolf-like mutts are not just murderous creatures created to kill those remaining but horrific monsters that resemble the now-dead tributes. The wolf-like mutts act as a physical representation of how the remaining tributes have themselves become murderous monsters throughout the course of the game.
The Wolf Mutts are a deadly threat in the original Hunger Games and are released by the Capital to make the game more exciting. The Hunger Games book uses the wolf mutts slightly differently. They were designed to look like fallen tributes - right down to the human-like eyes.
The hybrid mutts: The 74th Hunger Games' horrifying finale involves the release of giant mutt wolf-dogs who are genetically engineered with the eyes of the failed tributes. They spend the night feeding on Cato, the third-to-last tribute, while Peeta and Katniss huddle together on the Cornucopia and listen to him wail.
Katniss is sad that he's dead and struggles to hide her pain. She sleeps with her hood over her face to hide it from the cameras so that she can say goodbye to Thresh and thank him. She promises to remember him and help his and Rue's family if she wins.
Cato releases Peeta and falls off of the Cornucopia. The dogs immediately attack him. When Katniss realizes that the dogs intend to kill Cato slowly, she fires her last arrow at Cato, putting him out of his misery. His death marks the end of the 74th Hunger Games.
It is unknown why only Clove went in for the backpack, but by the time she is fatally wounded by Thresh, Cato is too far away to save her. As Katniss flees the feast, she sees Cato kneel beside Clove and beg her to stay with him.
Cato's moans are never-ending, and Katniss feels only pity for him and wants his suffering to stop. Morning finally comes and Katniss is able to see Cato below. Out of pity, she uses her last arrow to end Cato's life.
