The Conjuring 2, The Nun, and The Nun II has Valak as the main antagonist, taking on the form of a demonic nun and The Crooked Man from the rhyme "There Was a Crooked Man". However, it has not been confirmed if Valak is the Crooked Man. The Nun revealed that it took the form of a nun to hide amongst the Sisters.
In The Conjuring 2, right after Lorraine wakes from her nightmare, the decorative wood letters V, A, L, A, and K can be seen spelling out Valak's name on the bookshelf behind her. It was implied that Valak appeared as a nun in order to test Lorraine Warren's faith and distort her perception of her Catholic beliefs.

Irene uses the relic against Maurice, but he grabs it, causing Valak to appear. Similar to Father Noiret, Valak lifts Irene in the air and sets her ablaze. Irene does not burn as Valak realizes she is a descendant of St. Lucy, able to harness the same power associated with the relic.
A terrifying showdown between good and evil ensues during which Valak ends up with the eyes and uses their power to lift Irene into the air and set her aflame.

The Nun movies are actually prequels to The Conjuring series. While The Nun and its sequel take part in the 1950s, The Conjuring is set in the 1970s. Valak torments a young nun throughout the series, and it's only when Lorraine encounters Valak two decades after that we see the demon defeated.
During the chaotic final battle with Valak, the demon possessed Frenchie while he fought to save Sister Irene's life, and the young man was doomed from that point.
Perhaps this is the key to why Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren have so much in common. They're not close relatives and they're not the same person, but they are both scions of Saint Lucy.
