In the story, Dorothy has returned to Kansas after the tornado transported her to Oz, but she finds the land devastated by the storm. She then is transported back to Oz to save her friends, the Tin Woodsman, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, who have been turned into china by a new villain, the Jester.
In order to return to Kansas, the Good Witch of the North consults a magical blackboard which recommends: "Let Dorothy go to the City of Emeralds" and ask the Wizard of Oz to help her. The Good Witch of the North also kisses Dorothy on the forehead, stating that no one will harm a person who has been kissed by her.
Glinda the Good stepped down from her ruby throne to give the little girl a good-bye kiss, and Dorothy thanked her for all the kindness she had shown to her friends and herself.
