The capital created only male Jabberjays, but when left in the wild to die off, the birds mated with Mockingbirds, creating a species known as the Mocking Jay. Jabberjays were recreated for the use of the 75th Hunger Games. They tortured Katniss and Finnick by mimicking the voices of their loved ones screams.

After Maysilee was killed, Haymitch faced off against the last remaining tribute, a girl from District 1. Although his opponent nearly got the upper hand, Haymitch outsmarted her by leading her to the force field and dodging her ax throw, causing it to bounce back and kill her.
The following year after Lucy Gray Baird's victory, another female tribute emerged as the Hunger Games winner. Mags Flanagan became the first victor from District 4, living off of nuts and her survival skills by creating fishhooks. She was also the first victor to move to Victor's Village before serving as a mentor.
Rue, the girl tribute from District 11, is small and reminds Katniss of Prim. Rue is able to hop from tree to tree like a squirrel, a skill that helps her outrun and evade her competition. She tips Katniss off to the tracker jacker nest that saves Katniss' life.
