She outruns the fire but ends up in a section of the arena in which the Gamemakers shoot fireballs at her, and one catches her calf as she runs. She puts the fire out with her hands, leaving them mildly burned and her right calf much more severely injured.
Katniss finds that her door has been locked from the outside; she is again the Capitol's prisoner. The next morning, Katniss and Peeta reunite with Caesar Flickerman for their final interviews. They sit together on the sofa as they did the previous night, and Caesar asks them about their budding romance.
The explosions knock the wind out of Katniss and cause her to lose hearing in both of her ears. She knows that the Careers will be coming back to see what's become of their camp, but she can't stand.
Katniss nearly falls out of the tree when she hears Peeta's voice among them. Tension is high in this chapter as Katniss tries to decide what course of action to take. She second-guesses what Haymitch has told her to do, thinking about how much of an advantage might come from getting the bow and arrow.

What happened to Katniss in Chapter 8?
Katniss spends the rest of the day crying on her bed. She believes that the Gamemakers will punish her for what she's done, that they'll make her an Avox and cut out her tongue. She imagines all of the possible scenarios, but is most fearful that the Capitol people will go after Prim and her mother.
The crowd goes crazy over Peeta's declaration of love for Katniss. When the interviews are over, Katniss encounters Peeta and shoves him, making him fall over an urn and cut his hands on the broken shards. Katniss says he had no right to share that about her. Effie, Haymitch, and some others arrive.
Katniss is rendered deaf in one ear after she blows up the Careers' supplies, and she doesn't regain any hearing on her left side until afterwards when the Capitol gives her a hearing aid.
Katniss spends the night caring for Peeta, who is feverish because of the infection. In the morning, he keeps trying to be playfully romantic, but Katniss won't play along. Later that day, Katniss sees that Peeta's leg is getting worse. The infection is spreading.
The rest of the Gamemakers are eyeing the roast pig that has arrived at their banquet table, so Katniss aims at the apple in the roast pig's mouth and strikes true, pinning the pig to the wall. Katniss thanks them, bows, and exits.
Summary and Analysis Part 3: Chapter 24. Katniss can tell that Peeta feels bad about unintentionally killing Foxface. As they cook their food, Katniss realizes she hasn't been very nice to Peeta all day, so when he asks to go back to the cave, Katniss aggress even though she doesn't want to make the long trek back.
Katniss explains that the berries, some of which Foxface stole, are poisonous. In a way, Peeta outsmarted Foxface. They decide to hold on to the rest of the berries in case the same opportunity arises with Cato.
Katniss begins to wake from a deep sleep. She believes she's at home, that her mother is stroking her hair, but instead she finds herself in a cold, damp cave. For a moment, she's alarmed, but then relaxes at the sight of Peeta. The medicine worked, and he is recovering quickly.
Katniss solidifies her alliance with Rue in this chapter by giving Rue enough warning to get away before she sends the nest to the floor. Rue tips Katniss off to the nest, and Katniss returns the favor, foreshadowing more teamwork in their future.
Summary and Analysis Part 2: Chapter 15. Katniss continues to struggle against the tracker jacker venom, which targets a person's fears and makes them come to life through hallucinations. She remains in a nightmarish haze, imagining Prim dying, her father's last moments, and herself torn to pieces. Finally, she wakes.
Katniss keeps walking and then falls to the ground atop some mud, thinking that this would be a nice place to die. Then she realizes that mud means there must be water nearby. She crawls farther and finds a pond, purifies her water, and drinks it down.
Katniss feels betrayed at first, but she realizes that she and Peeta will soon be trying to kill each other in the Games anyway. Katniss spends four hours training with Effie on presentation, learning to smile more and walk in high heels, before she moves on to train with Haymitch for content.
In Chapter 4, we see how Katniss learned to forage, and she describes how, after the meal of katniss roots she gathered, she and her family felt full for the first time in months.
With a single arrow, Katniss kills the boy from District 1, who speared Rue, and takes Rue's hand. Rue makes Katniss promise that she'll win for both of them, and then asks Katniss to sing her a song. Katniss sings a lullaby from her district, and when she's finished, the mockingjays pick up her song.

Summary: Chapter 16. Katniss considers how to destroy the Careers' supplies while Rue sleeps beside her and thinks how the Careers' lifetimes of being well-fed will work against them. In the morning, she wakes to the sound of the cannon. Another tribute has died.
Summary and Analysis Part 3: Chapter 25. Katniss can see that the creatures are muttations. From a distance, they look like wolves but are able to balance on their hind legs. She follows Cato toward the Cornucopia and starts climbing, then remembers Peeta with his hurt leg.
