It is broadly assumed that Cruella is a prequel for 101 Dalmatians, but here's the issue: Cruella takes place in the late 1970s, the original 101 Dalmatians takes place in 1958, and the live-action 101 Dalmatians take place in 1996.
Anita is the protagonist of the 1961 animated film "101 Dalmatians." While we never learn her last name, she eventually marries Roger and takes his last name, Radcliffe. In the live-action prequel spin-off, Anita's last name is Darling, which may have made Disney fans smile.

It is there the movie arbitrarily suggests Cruella de Vil's eventual obsession with Dalmatians is because that breed of dog was used as a literal murder weapon in the death of her mother.
