Voldemort's Quest for the Elder Wand Led Him to Grindelwald
As these items were the stuff of wizarding legend, finding the Elder Wand was not easy. He Who Shall Not Be Named interrogated the wandmaker Ollivander for information about the Elder Wand, then began his search for the powerful item in Eastern Europe.
It was only during the confrontation in Grindelwald's cell that Voldemort learned Albus Dumbledore had claimed the wand in a duel decades back. Grindelwald baffled Voldemort when he showed no fear during the interrogation, taunting Voldemort and laughing at his desire for the wand.

It is learned that Grindelwald was still alive, though imprisoned in the highest tower in Nurmengard, the prison Grindelwald himself built to hold those who opposed him. Voldemort successfully hunted him down there, although Grindelwald lied to Voldemort, claiming never to have had the Elder Wand.

Ultimately, it's a good thing that Dumbledore's plans didn't work out because if Draco hadn't disarmed the headmaster, Harry wouldn't have gained the Elder Wand's power when he later disarmed Draco. This was proof that, unlike Dumbledore, Harry was destined to reunite the Hallows and become Master of Death all along.

During his final confrontation with Voldemort, Harry knew that he (Harry) was the Elder Wand's true master. He again cast Expelliarmus, ejecting the wand from Voldemort's hand into his own as the Killing Curse rebounded off his body, fatally striking Voldemort.
However, to spare Draco's soul from being forever tainted by committing murder, Dumbledore pre-arranged his own death with Snape. Voldemort intended Draco to die in the attempt to kill Dumbledore so that Lucius would be punished for his failure to retrieve the prophecy from the Ministry of Magic.

Voldemort only killed him while he rotted in a cell in the prison Nurmengard because he was frustrated, in a rush to go after Harry, and realized that Grindelwald wasn't going to give him the location of the Elder Wand. Without Voldemort, Grindelwald would potentially still be alive.
