In Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," Gaston hates Belle because she is not interested in him romantically and does not fit his ideal image of a woman. He is also jealous of her affection for the Beast, whom he sees as an inferior and unworthy rival.
Gaston is proud, boorish, uncultured, impolite, and sexist. He was also arrogant, as evidenced by his setting up a wedding before he even proposed to Belle under the expectation that she'd approve of becoming his wife. He was also convinced that he is powerful enough to defeat the bigger and stronger Beast by himself.
