The protagonist of the series, Katniss is a tough young woman who has a strong urge to always protect those weaker than herself. At the start of the novel, she craves little more than a simple, safe life for herself and her loved ones.
Katniss wants to run away and start a new life in the wild before the Capitol can kill them. Gale asks her to consider the families who can't run away, and tells her it isn't about saving only themselves.
Katniss is fiercely protective of her younger sister, and she volunteers to take Prim's place in the Hunger Games to protect her. In fact, Katniss is more responsible than anyone else for her family's wellbeing.
In The Hunger Games, it is obviously found from Katniss' struggle for gaining her goals by being the girl who fight for everything which portrays American characters. She manifests five American values: Activity and Work, Efficiency and Practicality, Progress, Freedom and Achievement and Success.
Over the course of the series, Katniss spends a lot of time with Peeta, whom she distrusts at first because he is seen as her competition. She slowly grows to admire his understated skills, his goodness, and his willingness to work with her, despite their technically being enemies.

Who does Katniss like more?
Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him. The debate between Peeta and Gale continues among fans.
Likes include: bows, arrows, and lamb stew. Also: a certain guy named Gale. Dislikes include: Haymitch Abernathy, tracker jacker stings, getting her leg hair waxed, and the family cat. Also: occasionally her mother.
In the story, the dandelion becomes a symbol of hope for Katniss, and evidence of her resourcefulness and expert foraging. When she sees the field of dandelions, she gains confidence in her ability to feed her family.
Katniss is ready to take action against the Capitol and the Careers, and she wants to avenge Rue's death. Her promise to Rue gives her the drive to win, even more so than her promise to Prim. It is also Rue's death that makes Katniss want to shame the Capitol.
Not only is Katniss's altruism and selflessness awe-inspiring, but she proved to be quite an intriguing and complex character. Her development also captivated many fans too since her strong leadership skills and tactical mindset helped her come up with some wise and deeply resonating quotes.
For every positive aspect, there comes a negative. And, while Peeta's ability to be open, to be himself, and to share his sincere feelings enabled him to manipulate the people around him, it also put him in a position where he could easily be manipulated.
Weakness: She isn't always honest about her true emotions
However, at times, this can be a weakness. She has a difficult time understanding how she really feels about things, especially when it comes to relationships, and she's even worse at expressing those feelings.
Katniss Everdeen, heroine of The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, is said to have PTSD, demonstrated by the psychological effects of her traumatic journey through life.
But when Peeta found Katniss weakened and disoriented by the wasp venom, he saved her rather than choosing to kill her or lead the Careers to her. Peeta clearly still feels a sense of loyalty to Katniss, and he likely has genuine romantic feelings for her.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
It took time for Peeta to break out of that conditioning, and even when the possibility existed that Peeta could be a danger to Katniss, the two of them still elected to be together and build a future in a post-Hunger-Games world. Their love for one another is evident.
Katniss never hallucinates about her dad's death after being stung by tracker jackers. Rue's dad doesn't start a riot in District 11 after his daughter's death. Haymitch doesn't convince the Game Maker to change the solo victor rule.
Katniss was dressed as an innocent young girl in a yellow dress that resembled candlelight to draw attention away from her rebellious actions. “When President Snow gave the crown to Katniss, he gave her a venomous look that let her know he would get revenge.”
She had dreams of running away and finding somewhere where she could be safe. She dreamed of what life would be like if she wasn't stuck in District 12. She constantly risked her life for the people she loved, and it eventually came back to haunt her.

Characterization. Peeta is the same age as Katniss, making him 16 years old in The Hunger Games and 17-18 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Peeta is of "medium height, stocky build" and has "ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead." He has blue eyes.
Katniss has just learned that Peeta has romantic feelings for her, and initially she feels she is being used. She becomes angry with Peeta as a result, going so far as to shove him over an urn of flowers.
The only information the audience has about Katniss' future is that she and Peeta have a child together 15 years after their experiences in the Rebellion (at 33 years old) and that five years later, they have a second child.
