Boba Fett's famous green and red armor represents duty and honoring one's parent, respectively. In Legends, Boba Fett was not only a bounty hunter, but also a Journeyman Protector (a Mandalorian police officer) and the Mand'alor who succeeded Fenn Shysa, making duty one of his defining characteristics.
The armor was forged from beskar. It was originally silver and blue while in Jango's possession. Its sleek design was eventually altered to a green and brownish red appearance after Boba inherited it.
What is the significance of the Mandalorian armor?
The unique armor became a symbol of fear across the galaxy as the Mandalorian warriors engaged in numerous wars. Due to the durability of the beskar metal, some armor sets were hundreds of years old, such as in the case of Sabine Wren's armor. Beskar armor was forged by Mandalorian Armorers.
Why is Boba Fett allowed to wear Mandalorian armor?
As of 2020, Boba Fett wears Mandalorian armor. In S2E8, Boba Fett says aloud he is not Mandalorian. In S2E6 of The Mandalorian, it is explained that the Fetts are considered foundlings, with armor gifted by Mandalorians, so he's Mandalorian in the same way that Mando is a Mandalorian.
Boba Fett's armor was previously stated to be made of durasteel. However, "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" of The Mandalorian retconned the Fett armor into being made of beskar.
After receiving some help from the Mandalorian with a problem, he willingly handed over Jango Fett's armor, with both characters completely unaware of its history.. As for how Boba Fett knew it was given to Mando, that can be attributed to the end of the premiere, which showed him observing the two on Tatooine.
The appearance of a Mandalorian's armor was largely up to the individual, as the highly independent Mandalorian people customized their armor with different colored paint schemes, clan and unit sigils, personalized glyphs, or other marking patterns in accordance to their own tastes.
So, maybe it wasn't about trying to have Grogu look like Yoda, but rather figuring out a specific design for himself. Given the rarity of his species in the galaxy, along with the fact that the only other two known members of Grogu's species were both living in the Temple when he was born, it seems likely that Grogu is the child of Yoda and Yaddle and was born to help preserve their rare species.

Jango Fett was a Mandalorian. He got the distinctive Beskar steel armor and attached weapons systems the same way every other warrior of the clan did; he earned it. Jango fought in the Mandalorian Civil War as a Mandalorian Commando. He was a foundling, just like Din Djarin long after him.
Boba Fett's armor in The Mandalorian is largely repurposed from his father, Jango Fett's - but his helmet was destroyed long before the events taking place in the Disney+ series, and well before the character's film debut in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
His helmet is legacy that Boba values more than he values himself, yet the helmet actually was Jango's, not a duplicate for trap purposes as some people would assume. Boba put a bomb inside the helmet of Jango as an attempt to assassinate his father's killer.

In addition, one of the announcement teasers for The Mandalorian described Jango and his son Boba as Mandalorians, leaving their actual status as Mandalorians ambiguous. The discrepancy was resolved in "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" of The Mandalorian Season Two, which revealed that Fett was a Mandalorian foundling.
From something as small as a pauldron, which Din once removed to ease Grogu to sleep in The Mandalorian season 1, to an entire suit of armor as Sabine is seen doing in Ahsoka, a Mandalorian is allowed to remove their armor.
