The key idea in The Hunger Games is how violence can be used to control a people. President Snow uses the Hunger Games as a way to remind the districts of their helplessness, while also feeding his constituents' unceasing appetite for entertainment.
Explaining why there must be only one winner, Snow says diabolically, “Hope: It is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective; a lot of hope is dangerous. Spark is fine, as long as it's contained. So, contain it.”
Compared to fear, hope is a weak human emotion. Although hope can often help a person overcome difficulties, it does not generally take full control of the person's behavior, like fear can. Fear does not need to have dominance over the whole mind to show its strength. Fear can be powerful in minute quantities.
What does the Hunger Games teach us about society?
The movies and books did create huge profits for such a violent series with such a radical message. For such a mainstream series, The Hunger Games really does have a lot to say. The trilogy questions corrupt political power, undistributed wealth, capitalism, racism and it questions its readers too.

What are the real world issues in the Hunger Games?
Suzanne Collins examines class division, inequality between citizens, governmental oppression, human suffering, corruption, destruction of buildings and obedience in The Hunger Games Trilogy. All of these issues raised in the Trilogy serve as bridges between today's modern world and the nation of Panem.
Over time, however, Katniss gradually realizes there are more important things than survival and becomes deeply invested in her relationships with the country around her, most especially Peeta and the second rebellion, being willing to fight and die for both.
Katniss herself is a symbol of hope. Her strength and skill helps her win the Games against the odds. The odds are in her favour. She brings courage to the districts which is why President Snow views her as a threat.
She decides that she will have nothing more to do with Peeta and tosses his father's cookies out the train's window, but when she does this, she sees more dandelions and recalls Peeta's bruised face from years ago and how those dandelions gave her, her mother, and Prim hope.

District 13 is more egalitarian but different than communism. While I agree in theory that in in Communism everyone would be poor, there would still be class differences in practice, though not socially accepted / acknowledged. Hope provides a haven from pessimism, fear, and dread. It galvanizes our courage and mobilizes our energy and vitality. It enhances our mood and focuses our creative thinking.
Hope gives us the push to move forward, and go past things that try and stop us having a happy life, overcoming all the obstacles in our path. Without hope we would say “why bother” and just wallow in misery.
Experiencing hope dampens the anxiety circuits in the brain, and when you feel less anxious, your brain function improves. The flip side of hope is fear and sometimes fear and despair are easier to fall into than hope. Fear disempowers hope and paralyzes action by activating the anxiety and fear pathways in our brains.
