No doubt about it: Strange World is a climate change warning. This movie, released in November 2022, follows three generations of the Clades (grandfather Jaeger, father Searcher, and son Ethan) in their pursuit to save the world.
What is the message behind the Strange World movie?
Throughout the film, the message of accepting others is strongly pushed. For example, Jaeger Clade cannot accept that Searcher Clade does not want to be an explorer. This disagreement is what leads to them falling apart. 25 years later, Searcher Clade does the same with his son, Ethan, who wants to be an explorer.
In its core environmental metaphor, Strange World (Disney's 61st animated feature) is surprisingly subtle, because the inevitable fossil fuel crisis of our world is focused through a more sustainable source.
It's a bit heavy-handed but the message is clear: Being self-absorbed is not good for your family or the planet, so you need to adjust for the sake of the future.
These creatures are inspired by real-life organisms within creatures like a turtle or a fly. Some of the concept art of the creatures are also seen in the credits during the film. Tuk Tuk from Raya and the Last Dragon makes a cameo in the end after the Clades leave the strange world.

What does the turtle mean in Strange World?
However, the myth Strange World seems to be taking inspiration from is a legend from the indigenous peoples of North America. To the Lenape and Iroquois, Earth was created by piling soil on the back of a great sea turtle. That turtle grows until it carries the entire planet and contains that same symbol of longevity.
For starters, the pando isn't a power-generating plant — it's actually a sort of parasitic infection that is slowly killing the Clades' world, which turns out to be a gigantic creature floating in the middle of an endless ocean.

Jaeger's all about exploration, so he and Searcher run into conflict constantly, endangering the trip at times. Sadly, all this generational trauma begins to affect Ethan, with Searcher trying to control his destiny and push him to be a farmer in the same way Jaeger was toxic about Searcher being an adventurer.
While not a complete failure, Strange World lacks the signature Disney magic that makes their movies stand out. A likeable tale of sons seeking their own identity amid their fathers' expectations, it's a superbly well-made film, with fabulous animation.

According to Ethan, Legend is trained and knows to not go to the bathroom when inside the house. Legend was named after Disney Legend Burnett "Burny" Mattinson, who suggested a dog be added to the movie.
