It told how Balin discovered Durin's Axe, and established a small colony, but it was overrun by orcs and Balin was killed by an orc archer in Dimrill Dale. Thus he died in the same place as his father, having been self-proclaimed Lord of Moria for less than five years.
At the end of the novel, The Hobbit, Balin has formed such a great relationship with Bilbo that he is the only dwarf to visit him with Gandalf a second time. Later in life, Balin led an expedition to re-colonize the lost dwarven kingdom of Moria. He was successful, and declared Lord of Moria.
Unfortunately, the Fellowship's journey only confirmed what he had feared. Although Gimli knew that Moria could be dangerous in the book, he did not know about Balin's death in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie possibly due to slow communication and Dwarves' perception of time.

Is Gimli the last Dwarf?
Though Gimli has no children, he is not the last Dwarf of Middle-earth. After the fall of Sauron, his people continued to thrive in the Lonely Mountain. Gimli made his home in Rohan, in the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, and many of his kinsfolk came with him.
Gandalf didn't know that the Mines of Moria had fallen. He mentions he had been through Moria before, but it was before it had been resettled, which means it would not have had the chance to be overrun yet. All that was known about the mines was that the dwarves had gone silent.
Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death. Dain's son, Thorin Stonehelm, became King after Dain died in the Battle of Dale. The line continued on after that.
What happened to the Arkenstone at the end of The Hobbit?
After the battle, the Arkenstone was placed by Bard upon Thorin's chest within his tomb deep underneath the Lonely Mountain, and so was returned to the earth at last.
Eventually, Legolas came to Ithilien with some of his people, with his father's leave, to live out his remaining time in Middle-earth helping to restore the woodlands that had been war-torn. After Aragorn's death, Legolas made a ship in Ithilien and left Middle-earth to go over the sea.
Gimli is not the last of the dwarves. This is a common misconception because Gimli is the only dwarf who gets a fair amount of coverage in the franchise. Lord of the Rings focuses its narrative primarily on the affairs of men, elves, and hobbits. Dwarves are a secluded race that lives in the mountains.
It is also stated in Unfinished Tales that Gimli was prevented from traveling with his father on the Quest of Erebor because Thorin and Company thought him too young, though Gimli, being in his sixties, considered himself ripe for adventure and was disappointed to be left behind.
Thrór was murdered as he entered the East-gate of Moria, leading to the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. Even after the end of the War, many Dwarves refused to reclaim Moria, partially because of the Durin's Bane. Years later however, the Dwarves managed to reclaim the Lonely Mountain.

It's puzzling that Balin is referred to as “very old” when he is first introduced in The Hobbit, but that's how Tolkien wrote it. In 2941 when the Quest of Erebor took place Balin was 178 years old. He was killed in Third Age 2994 in Moria at the age of 233.
While Thranduil didn't have a problem with Dwarves, he didn't care for a lot of Elves. In the book, Thranduil was an isolationist and with good reason. Thranduil was a Sindarin Elf, which meant that he had never been to Valinor, and he grew up in Doriath under the leadership of King Elu Thingol and Melian the Maia.
Thus, Galadriel's dark form in Jackson's The Lord of the Rings personified what would have occurred had the Lady of Lothlorien given in to temptation and taken the One Ring for herself. She would have succumbed to evil because the Ring was indomitable, even with her power.

Gimli was born in the Ered Luin in the Third Age, son of Glóin. Gimli had wanted to accompany his father on the quest to reclaim Erebor, but at age 62 he was deemed too young. He was a remote descendant of Durin the Deathless, chief of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves and ancestor of the Longbeards.
With Thorin and his immediate family members dead, Dáin succeeded him as King under the Mountain. His job done, Bilbo Baggins parted ways with the Company and returned home to the Shire with Gandalf with his secret magic Ring always close at hand.
When The Fellowship is taken to Galadriel, she and Boromir have a telepathic conversation which immediately causes Boromir to burst into tears. She senses his desires for the Ring but tells him not to give in because even now, there is hope.
